Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Jacobson Posts Shutout in Laker Win at Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team swept the season series with SUNY Canton by shutting out the Kangaroos 6-0 on the road Saturday night. With the victory, the Lakers move to 18-4-1 overall on the year while the 'Roos fall to 7-16-2.

After in-conference action around the league during the Lakers' nonconference weekend, Oswego needs just one point during its final regular-season weekend to clinch the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC Championship. The upcoming weekend involves a pair of home games with Fredonia and Buffalo State on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both contests are slated for 7 p.m. puck drops.

In Canton on Saturday, David Jacobson captured his first- career shutout as a Laker by stopping 24 shots-on goal from the opposition. On the year, the sophomore now holds a 11-2-0 record.

It was a scoreless game through the first 20 minutes but Oswego broke it open in the final two periods. The Lakers scored three times in each 20-minute frame, opening with Mitchell Herlihey's tally at 1:45 of the second. Stephen Johnson notched the first of his two goals less than two minutes later. Senior Joey Davies closed the second period scoring 3:06 later, getting on the board in unassisted fashion.

To open the final period, Sean Federow registered a goal at 1:31 followed by Andrew Barton's lone score of the game at 4:20. The Laker scoring was capped with Johnson's second of the tilt with a little more than five minutes remaining in the game.

Finishing with three-point nights were Kenny Neil and Herlihey. The former recorded his three all on helpers while the latter added to assists to his aforementioned second-period goal. Oswego's other point scorers – all with one assist apiece – were Chris Raguseo, Shawn Hulshof, Alex Botten, Chris Waterstreet and Matt Galati.

The special teams units had solid performances against Canton, with the power-play crew going 2-for-4 while the penalty kill squad stopped all three 'Roo extra-man chances.
