OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State women's ice hockey team avenged Saturday's loss to Buffalo State with a convincing 5-1 win on Sunday in the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the victory, the Lakers are now 16-6-1 overall and 10-5-1 in the ECAC West while the Bengals drop to 16-6-1, 11-5-1.
Oswego scored early and often in the tilt, all on rebounds as it berated the Buffalo State goaltender with 16 first period shots. The Lakers' first goal came from
Olivia Ellis off a
Jacquelin White attempt with an assist credited to
Alexa Aramburu. That tally came at 1:25 and less than two minues later, Oswego was at it again. At 3:17,
Alyssa Brockmann sent the puck towards the net but it deflected off a few players until
Julieann White corralled it on the doorstep. The freshman tried to jam it home but the goalie made an itinital save. A rebound, however, trickled into the crease and
Eryn Stewart used her full extension to stuff the puck into the net.
Already leading 2-0, the Lakers benefitted from a body check penalty to the Bengals at 6:08. This time Ju. White and Stewart switched rolls as Stewart took the first chance from the right post while Ju. White found the back of the net on the rebound. Oswego's third goal was made possible by
Victoria Blake, who carried the puck into the offensive zone, crossed in front of the goalie and threw a shot on-goal to start the rebound chances.
The two squads traded goals in the middle period, starting with Buffalo State at 6:51. In an unlucky moment for Oswego, goalie
Mariah Madrigal made a save on a Natsha Steile shot but the rebound popped up in the air and bounced off a Bengal player near the crease for a tally. Oswego answered with just 31.1 left in the second, as Ellis got her second of the day when she stole the puck in the Buffalo State offensive zone and got her rebound for a second-chance goal, her 13th of the year.
In the final period, Oswego tacked another on with less than four minutes to play. Ju. White stole the puck behind the Buffalo State goal, swung around and found
Andrea Noss streaking towards the net. Noss had no problem putting it home for her sixth notch of the year at 16:32.
Mariah Madrigal started in net for the Lakers, making 25 saves while allowing just one goal to help even the season series with the Bengals.
Special teams were solid in the game, as Oswego held Buffalo State scoreless on four power-play opportunities while converting on 50-percent of its own (1-for-2).
Oswego will play a home-and-home series with William Smith College to close out the regular season next weekend. On Friday, the Lakers will be in Geneva for a 7 p.m. puck drop before returning home to face the Herons at 2 p.m. on Saturday for Senior Day.
