GENEVA, N.Y. -- The No. 8/10 Oswego State women's ice hockey team fell on the road - 3-1 - at the hands of conference-rival William Smith on Friday evening. Oswego falls to 16-7-1 overall and 10-6-1 in the league, while the Herons improve to 7-12-5 and 4-9-4.
Oswego got on the board early in this contest with the first goal of the game, but was unable to hold the lead, eventually succumbing to a balanced Heron attack. In the first period at the 3:17 mark, William Smith was whistled for a delayed penalty. The Lakers sent goalie
Mariah Madrigal to the bench to make room for an extra attacker, but it would only last seven seconds before the Herons were able to make a play on the puck.
It would matter none as the nationally-ranked Lakers needed just 14 seconds into the power play chance to score the game's first goal.
Julieann White received passes from
Victoria Blake and
Eryn Stewart to tally her third goal of the season and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Oswego outshot William Smith by a large margin - 56-19 - despite eventually falling. Madrigal was tagged with the loss, although only allowing just a pair of goals in the second period and making 16 saves. The Herons added an extra score on the empty net opportunity with just 15 seconds left.
Women's ice hockey returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the backend of the home-and-home series with the Herons. Oswego will also honor its seven seniors during its last regular season home game.
