DOVER, Del. – The No. 12 Oswego State baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Wesley College on Sunday afternoon. Oswego moves to 2-2 on the year, while Wesley drops its first game of the year before moving back into the win column at 4-1.
Game One: Oswego 7, Wesley 2 (7 inn.)
Eric Hamilton led the early surge in the opening contest, slapping a double down the left-field line in the first after
Kevin Hylas reached base. Later in the inning after Hamilton moved to third, Barnes drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
Oswego cruised to a 6-0 lead through five innings as
Wes Randall and
Kyle Dinges collected RBI singles in the second and fifth innings, respectively. In fifth,
Eric Hamilton crushed his second homer of the year, while driving in Hylas.
After Wesley nabbed a run on a RBI single in the sixth,
Myles Kutscher answered back with a solo shot in the top of the seventh.
Mitchell Cavanagh pitched an absolute gem, dealing five shutout innings. He surrendered just two hits from the bump, while striking out 10 Wolverines.
Game Two: Wesley 4, Oswego 3 (7 inn.)
Similar to the day's first game, Oswego claimed an early lead. In the opening stanza, Randall ripped a leadoff double before stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch. The senior tallied another run scored in the third after Hamilton reached base on an error.
Reston Pettit started on the mound for the Lakers and cruised through the first three-plus innings before Wesley was able to gather momentum. The Wolverines' Cody Ellis hit a bases-clearing double down the left-field line to give Wesley a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Pettit would go six innings on the day and added one strikeout in the no decision.
Wesley's lead did not last long, as Hamilton answered the call again. The senior infielder smacked his second homer of the day and third of the season to tie the game in the sixth. Through the season's first weekend, Hamilton has seven hits and nine RBI, while collecting six extra-base hits.
Trey Mears would get the last say for Wesley as the senior drove in Deshawn Aiken for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Nathan Boughton took the loss on the bump after making it through two-thirds of an inning in relief. He allowed two walks, while striking out one Wolverine.
Oswego returns to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday as it travels to Newport News, Va. for a doubleheader at Christopher Newport University, which was receiving votes in the preseason poll.
