ELMIRA, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State women's ice hockey team picked up one point with a 2-2 tie in overtime at No. 5/5 Elmira College on Saturday afternoon. With the tie – just the Lakers' second stalemate in 23 meetings with the Soaring Eagles – Oswego is 15-5-1 overall and 9-4-1 in the ECAC West. Elmira goes to 15-2-4 on the year and 12-0-2 in league play.
In a total turn from Friday's contest between the two top-10-ranked squads, where no scoring was accomplished, all of Saturday's scores came in the opening 20 minutes. Oswego created the first tally of the contest, as
Olivia Ellis found
Jacquelin White at 8:15 to make it 1-0. The Lakers wasted no time in extending their lead, as White and Ellis teamed up again with additional help from Alex Aramburu. Aramburu and Ellis worked as the helpers on White's second notch of the day, just 1:54 later.
Often referred to as the most dangerous advantage in hockey, the two-goal edge quickly evaporated. In a 34-second span, the Soaring Eagles found the back of the net twice, knotting up the game at 2-2 with 6:06 remaining in the first. From there on out, it was a goalie's duel.
Amber Samonek was brilliant in net throughout the tilt, recording double-figure saves in multiple periods. On the day, the freshman set a new best-mark in her young career with 38 saves against Elmira. That included 13 stops in the first, 14 in the second and two in the overtime to preserve a point in the standings.
During special teams' chances, the Laker power-play unit was unable to cash in on two occasions while the penalty-kill team denied Elmira on one of its three chances.
Oswego will return to the ice for competition at 3 p.m. on Saturday as it hosts Buffalo State for the annual Pink the Rink Weekend. Stay tuned in the coming days for information on a pink jersey auction to support the American Cancer Society.
