OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's lacrosse team grabbed a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Oneonta on Saturday at Laker Turf Stadium. It is the Lakers' second-consecutive SUNYAC win to move the squad back to .500 (2-2) in league play while holding a 5-7 overall mark. Prior to Saturday's tilt, the Lakers honored their eight seniors on Senior Day:
Tim Garrett,
Chase Izyk,
Wyatt Russo,
Joe Noce,
Ben Roberts,
Evan Priest,
Mike Byrne and
Zach Anderson.
Trailing 7-5 early in the final period, Oswego's offense and defense started clicking on all cylinders. The Laker defense did not allow a Red Dragon tally in the last 12 minutes of regulation while the offense scored three times to erase the two-goal deficit.
Wyatt Russo made three saves in those final 12 minutes to keep Oneonta off the board while
Adam Burlew caused a Red Dragon turnover on their final possession to seal the win.
Mark Niechcial's seventh goal of the season proved to be the difference maker, as he scored an unassisted goal with 3:51 on the clock to put Oswego ahead for good, 8-7. That score was the last of a three-goal spurt the Lakers used to secure the victory. The first in the run was from
Pat Kenneally from Anderson on a man-up opportunity. Oswego's second goal during the span was Anderson's eighth of his senior campaign on an assist from Niechcial.
Oswego never trailed in the first half and held a 5-3 advantage at the break. Oneonta held the Lakers scoreless in the third quarter while finding the back of the net twice to knot the game at 5-5 heading into the final 15 minutes. The Red Dragons scored the contest's next two goals to own a 7-5 lead with 12:12 left in regulation.
Niechcial and Anderson paced the Lakers with three points each on two goals and one assist apiece. Kenneally,
Tim Schof and
Jarrod Wilkom each had two-point outings. Kenneally's both came on goals, Schof scored once and helped on another while Wilkom played distributor for both his points. Rounding out the Oswego point scorers was
Bobby Emerson with a goal.
Noce picked up a team-high four ground balls while
Teddy Phillips had three to go along with a game-high three caused turnovers.
John Petrelli also racked up three ground balls in the game.
At the X, Oswego was able to win 11 faceoffs in 19 attempts as
Kyle O'Connor went 6-for-9 while Izyk won 5-of-9.
Russo wrapped his day with just seven goals allowed while turning away nine Oneonta shots on-goal. The senior is now 4-7 on the year.
Oswego will return to the field at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts SUNY Canton in a nonconference game under the lights at Laker Turf Stadium.
