OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team defeated the Ithaca Bombers in a solo nonconference matchup 6-3 at Laker Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon. Oswego snapped Ithaca's 10-game winning streak en route to improving to 24-8 on the year, while the Bombers fall to 20-9.
As
Zach Whelan took his lead off of second base,
Eric Hamilton cracked a double to the right field gap. Whelan's run broke a 1-1 deadlock and propelled the Lakers to eventual victory as they would not look back.
Later in the frame,
Josh Hoagland slapped a bloop single close to the right-field line, which scored Hamilton after the latter stole third base, giving Oswego a 3-1 lead. Hamilton has taken 12-of-15 stolen bases on the season.
The Lakers tallied a run apiece during the bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to claim a 6-1 advantage.
Collin Thompson and
Eli Holton collected an RBI each as they reached on a single and a fielder's choice, respectively. Oswego's final tally came as Whelan stole third and scored on a throwing error by the opposing catcher.
During the opening inning, Hamilton got the Laker offense going with a single through the right side. The Liverpool, N.Y. native proceeded to take one of his two bases on the day. Hamilton continued to make his way around the horn, advancing to third on a
John Barnes ground out and then scoring on a
Mike Dellicarri single.
Brian Nolan earned his third win (3-1) of the season on the bump, tossing seven frames and surrendering just one run and two hits. The lefty hauler also struck out six Bomber batters. In relief,
Nick Demarco and
Matt Zakala wrapped up the contest, each pitching an inning.
Baseball returns to the diamond on Wednesday evening for a solo contest beneath the lights when they head west for a 6 p.m. game at the University of Rochester.
