OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's soccer team opened the 2017 slate with an emphatic 7-0 victory over Morrisville State College on Friday afternoon at Laker Soccer Field. Seven goals is the most Oswego had scored since it closed the 2012 season with an 8-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill at hom on Oct. 21.
Oswego opened the scoring in a unique way at 25:12. Freshman
Lynsey Roth sent a nice cross from the top right corner of the 18-yard box looking for a teammate at the far post. A Morrisville defender stepped in to block the attempt but accidentally headed the ball past her goalie for an own goal and a 1-0 Laker advantage. With just 50.5 seconds left in the opening period,
Audrey Burbidge found senior
Emma Geyer to make it 2-0 Oswego before the break.
The Laker opened it up in the second half, starting with
Mackenzie Schaffner's first collegiate goal. Schaffner took a corner kick for the home team and was able to curve the attempt clear of all other players, including the Mustangs' keeper, for a goal just 2:42 into the period.
Less than five minutes later, the Lakers were at it again, this time with transfer-junior
Gab Garcea's first goal in an Oswego uniform. Senior
Alexa Restante sent a low cross from the top of the box to Garcea who finished the play for a 4-0 Laker lead at 52:19. Geyer hopped back into the action just 31 seconds later, tallying her second goal of the day off Schaffner's first collegiate assist.
At 62:19, Oswego made it a 6-0 spread when another transfer-junior scored her first goal as a Laker.
Gabby Corrente found the back of the net off Burbidge's second assist of the day in her first contest at Oswego.
Samantha Shubert closed the scoring in the 71st minute as sophomore
Hannah Almy found the junior for a goal in the lower right corner to make it 7-0 in favor of the Lakers.
Oswego controlled the action all game, holding the ball in its offensive half for the majority of the competition. When the ball did cross midfield, the Laker defense was sharp, only allowing two shots, only one of which was on-goal. The save was made by Laker starter
Emma Allen, who played the game's first 66:19.
Sophia Portalatin finished the final 23:41 between the pipes but was not challenged.
In all, the Lakers outshot the Mustangs 40-2, with nearly half of their attempts coming on-goal. Oswego also tallied 14 corner kicks while not allowing Morrisville any chances.
Oswego returns to action at 1 p.m. on Friday when it faces Penn State Behrend in the first game of the Fredonia Tournament in Fredonia, N.Y.
