Lakers Suffer Road Setback at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The No. 3/5 Oswego State men's ice hockey team suffered a road setback to conference-foe Fredonia by a score of 3-2 on Friday evening.  The loss is the first of the season for the Lakers.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Fredonia 3, Oswego 2
  • Location:  Steele Hall Ice Arena - Fredonia, N.Y.
  • Records:  Oswego (3-1, 1-1 SUNYAC) | Fredonia (4-1, 2-1 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fredonia got on the board first with a goal as the first period was winding down (19:04).  Brandon Spognardi recorded his first of the season on assists from Luke Rivera and Victor Tracy.
  • The Lakers outshot the Blue Devils eight to seven in the first and each team went 0-for-1 on the power play during the period.
  • The action picked up quickly in the second as Fredonia added their second goal just thirty-six seconds into the period.
  • Sophomore Carter Allen cut the Blue Devils' lead in half with a goal at 4:23 on an assist from Derek Brown.  The goal was the defenseman's first this season and first of his collegiate career.  For Brown, that gives the junior a point in each of the first four contests for Oswego.
  • Oswego had a pair of power plays (tripping, hooking) in the middle of the second period but could not capitalize on either opportunity.
  • In the third, the Lakers began short-handed as a penalty at 19:51 of the second put them down a man.  Shortly after killing off that penalty, Oswego incurred a five-minute major penalty.
  • Undaunted, Junior Tyler Currie would notch the equalizer for Oswego at 5:49 with a short-handed goal assisted by Josh Zizek and Josh Nenadal and tie the game at two apiece.  The goal was Currie's first of the season.
  • Just over a minute later, the Blue Devils would regain the lead on a 5-on-3 power play goal.
  • Oswego would get their own power play at the 11:59 mark, but the Fredonia penalty-kill unit would stand firm once more.
  • Statistically, the Lakers held edges in faceoffs won (36-24) and shots on goal (24-23).
  • In goal, junior David Richer (2-1) made 20 saves on the night.
WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers remain in Western New York tomorrow for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Bengals of Buffalo State.
