POTSDAM, N.Y. - Behind dougle-digit scoring from four Lakers, the men's basketball team mounted an impressive second half comeback to earn a 68-62 road win over the Bears of Potsdam. The win moves Oswego to 10-11 overall and 7-7 in the conference. The result is pivotal because it gives the Lakers a two and half game lead over the Bears for the final playoff spot in the SUNYAC Tournament as Potsdam falls to 10-12 overall (5-10).
Oswego and Potsdam played even most of the first half, with no team getting a lead larger than three points.Â
Tyler Pierre was doing most of the Laker damage inside with 13 points in the half. With just over four minutes left in the first, Potsdam got momentum and went on an 11-2 run to end the half and take a 35-26 lead into the intermission.
Whatever Coach Leone said at halftime seemed to work because Oswego ran off the first 16 points to start the second half and scored 23 of the first 26 to go up by 11 points with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.Â
Brandan Gartland and
Jamir Ferebee scored 17 points during the run that got the Lakers back into it.
Potsdam would close the lead back to a bucket with a 9-0 surge over the next three minutes, but Oswego would counter with their own 7-2 run to keep the Bears down 56-49 with eight minutes left. The Bears would make another charge and grab the lead at 59-58 with 5:34 remaining on a 10-2 push.
Ian Schupp, Pierre, and Ferebee would all score in the next two minutes while the defense held the Bears without a point in pushing out to 64-59. Potsdam would get it back to two with a layup and a free throw, but one last Schupp jumper and a pair of Ferebee makes from the charity stripe would propel the Lakers to the win.
Pierre led Oswego with 19 points and nine rebounds. Ferebee and Gartland both had 16 while Schupp chipped in with 11.Â
Louis Avellino added eight rebounds in the win.
Oswego returns home to Max Ziel Gymnasium next Friday when they take on the Buffalo State Bengals at 7:30 p.m.
