Lakers Unable to Overcome Utica; Teams Tie

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 5/5 Oswego State men's ice hockey saw a repeat of last year's Jan. 20th 3-3 (OT) tie with Utica College on Friday evening. Derek Brown had a two-point outing, earning himself the title of First Star of the Game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Utica jumped out to an early lead as former-Laker Joey Rutkowski was able to clean up on a Pioneer shot less than two minutes into the opening period. Shawn Lynch and Gregg Burmaster were credited with assists on Rutkowski's goal.
  • It took just four minutes for junior Tyler Currie to even the score, as he was able to slot a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle. Recording assists on the Laker tally was Josh Nenadal and Brown.
  • The Pioneers would regain the lead once more before the end of the first period, as Conor Landrigan capitalized on an offensive zone turnover with 6:59 remaining in the period.
  • Josh LeBlanc opened the second period with a tally, as he was able to clean up after a Tanner Spink shot that was padded away by the Utica goaltender. Spink was credited with the sole assist on LeBlanc's score.
  • For the third and final time of the contest, the Pioneers went up a goal as Josh Haskin was able to knock down a Daniel Fritz wrister in front of the net, putting the puck five-hole at 15:13.
  • Brown recorded his second point of the game when he denied the Pioneers a victory with an unassisted goal at 14:04, eventually sending the game into a five-minute overtime period.
  • The Lakers had several viable shots on-goal in the extra period, the closet of which was by way of captain Devin Campbell who wristed a Michael Gillespie pass from the left faceoff circle at 47.1.
  • Oswego goaltender David Richer amassed 18 saves during his 65 minutes between the pipes.
  • The Lakers owned advantages in shots (51-35), shots on-goal (29-21) and faceoff wins (41-24).

WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday as they travel to Elmira to faceoff against the Soaring Eagles in a nonconference contest.
