Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rojas Scores as Lakers Tie No. 13/24 Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's soccer team remained unbeaten in SUNYAC action with an impressive double-overtime tie against nationally-ranked Cortland at home on Saturday afternoon.  Oswego and Cortland's tie snaps a 12-game losing streak in the series for the Lakers and is the first tie in between the two since 1993. Cortland came into the weekend ranked No. 13 by D3soccer.com and 24th in the United Soccer Coaches national poll.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oswego 1, Cortland 1 (2OT)
  • Location: Laker Turf Stadium – Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: Oswego 7-3-1 (2-0-1 SUNYAC)  |  Cortland 6-2-2 (2-0-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, the Lakers needed just 34 seconds in the second stanza to light up the scoreboard.
  • Caleb Asamoah settled a bad touch by a Cortland player several yards outside the 18-yard box. Asamoah dribbled towards the top of the arc and drew the attention of three Cortland defenders to his left. The senior capitalized on the defensive shift, seeing freshman Steven Rojas in his peripheral vision before slipping a pass between multiple Red Dragon defenders. Rojas collected the ball on the top-left of the box and used two quick touches before lofting a shot over a leaping Cortland goalie and just under the crossbar for a 1-0 Laker lead.
  • Oswego lead would last for the next 15 minutes before Cortland would even the score. A Red Dragon player attempted a shot from inside the box but it was slowed by a teammate's heel. A lucky bounce to the player's toe and barely kept onside, Cortland was able to get the shot off past a diving goalie before a collision to knot the game at 60:59.
  • The goal was the first that Laker keeper Brian Terra had surrendered in 348 minutes of game time dating back to a goal in the 73rd minute against nationally-ranked Ithaca on Sept. 17.
  • Terra closed the 110-minute outing with six saves against the Red Dragons.
  • Oswego and Cortland finished with seven shot on-goal apiece while the Lakers withstood seven Red Dragon corner kicks to zero chances of their own.
  • Oswego's seven on-target attempts were scatted evenly between Rojas, Asamoah, Anthony Paris, Jack Van Pelt, Jacob Munski, Michael Gualtieri and Kieran Gilroy.

The Lakers will be off until Friday when they resume conference competition with a home match against Oneonta. Kick-off is schedule for 4 p.m.
