Farmer Records Shutout in Home Ice Victory

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team split its weekend-series with Buffalo State, claiming Saturday's Teal Game matchup 2-0. Goaltender Rachael Farmer earned her third shutout in the victory.

THE BASICS
Results: Oswego 2, Buffalo State 0
Location: Marano Campus Center Arena – Oswego, N.Y.
Records: Oswego 9-7-3 (4-6-2 NEWHL)  I  Buffalo 6-12-2 (3-9-1 NEWHL)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Breaking the scoreless stalemate five minutes into the final period, Annika Neufeld-Kreider was able to deflect a Skylar Byrne shot far side, beating the Bengal tender's stick with the eventual game-winner. Also earning an assist on the goal was Sara Cruise, who led the team's rush into the offensive zone.
  • Following the Laker goal, the Bengals were given the opportunity to even the score as Megan Reukaf was awarded a penalty shot at 14:27. Reukaf's shot at the left post was denied by the left kicker of Farmer.
  • Cruise also recorded an insurance goal for the Lakers, a short-handed empty netter to seal the Oswego victory with 13.7 seconds remaining in the contest.
  • The teams went scoreless through the first two periods of play, trading grade-A scoring opportunities in the first stanza, first a Buffalo State odd-man rush. Natasha Steinle led a 2-on-1 rush in which her slap shot in front of the net was absorbed into the bread basket of Farmer at 13:55.
  • S. Byrne owned the Lakers best scoring chance in the first period, with her delayed penalty shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play with 11:08 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Farmer tallied 27 saves to secure the conference win.
  • For the second game in-a-row, the Lakers owned advantages in both shots and shots on-goal (69-36, 47-48) and in faceoff wins (34-21)
  • The team was also extremely efficient on the penalty-kill, killing off all five Laker penalties and recording a short-handed goal with several scoring opportunities.
