LEXINGTON, S.C. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State baseball team closed its spring break trip with a convincing victory over conference-foe Brockport on Sunday afternoon. Oswego scored runs in four of the final five innings, accounting for 10-unanswered tallies to capture the triumph.
THE BASICS
- Result: Oswego 12, Brockport 3
- Location: Lexington County Baseball Stadium – Lexington, S.C.
- Records: Oswego 9-5 (5-1 SUNYAC) | Brockport 7-9 (2-4 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oswego's second run in a four-run, fifth inning proved to be the game-winner, as the Lakers did not permit the Golden Eagles to score over their final five at-bats.
- With the bases loaded and the contest knotted at 3-3, Jonathan Luppens was hit by a pitch to push Lukas Olsson across.
- Mike Dellicarri then singled up the middle – in a rare pinch-hit situation for the senior – plating Casey Gruarin and Brandon Nicholson, advancing the Laker advantage to 6-3.
- Oswego added three in the top of the sixth, with Nick Chilson tripling to left center to drive in Olsson and Ryan Enos. Matt Deblasio collected the final RBI of the inning, as his groundout to short scored Chilson.
- Following a scoreless seventh, the Lakers tacked on two in the eighth, beginning with a Nicholson double down the left-field line to score Gruarin. A few batters later, Rocco Leone recorded a RBI groundout, plating Nicholson.
- The Lakers' final run of the game came in the ninth as Tim Schinto sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Enos.
- Oswego broke on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. Luppens doubled to left-center to score Gruarin and then scored himself a few batters later, thanks to Paul Tammaro fielder's choice.
- Brockport answered with two runs in the third to tie it and took its only lead of the game, 3-2, with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
- Enos led all hitters with a 3-for-5 showing and a game-high tying three-runs scored. Gruarin matched Enos' runs output in a 1-for-3 outing with two walks.
- Nicholson and Chilson each had two hits on five at-bats, combining for three RBI and three runs scored.
- On the bump, Brian Nolan secured the victory to move to 2-1 on the year. The senior threw six frames, scattering seven hits for three runs – only two of which were earned –while fanning seven.
- Kieran Finnegan (2.0) and Matt Zakala (1.0) finished the final three innings, with neither allowing a hit while combining for three strikeouts.
WHAT'S NEXT
Upon returning to New York, Oswego will prepare for its continuing SUNYAC schedule at New Paltz for a three-game series next weekend. The Lakers and Hawks will start with a single, nine-inning game on Friday, scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
