OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team led from start to finish in a single nine-inning game with SUNYAC-foe Oneonta at home on Friday afternoon. Oswego notched four runs in the bottom of the first frame and never looked back.
THE BASICS
- Result: Oswego 7, Oneonta 2
- Location: Laker Baseball Field – Oswego, N.Y.
- Records: Oswego 18-8 (9-1 SUNYAC) | Oneonta 13-14 (4-9 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lakers' first three hitters reached base as Paul Tammaro led off with a walk, followed by a Ryan Enos single and a Mike Dellicarri base on balls.
- Five-hitter Brandon Nicholson did not squander the bases loaded opportunity, doubling down the left field line, plating Tammaro and Enos.
- Dellicarri advanced to third on the double and scored on the very next pitch as a ball in the dirt got past the catcher and reached the backstop.
- Nick Chilson came to the plate next and pushed Brandon Nicholson 90 feet to score with a single through the left side.
- The squads traded runs in the fifth inning, with Nicholson almost single-handedly manufacturing his own run. Following a walk, Nicholson swiped second and third base for two of his three stolen bases on the afternoon. A Chilson sacrifice fly to center field scored Nicholson to send the Laker lead back to four at 5-1.
- Ahead 5-2 in the eighth, Oswego tacked on two insurance runs. Casey Gruarin began the inning with a single followed by a Tammaro base knock. Enos was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Dellicarri walked to drive in Gruarin. One at-bat later, Nicholson recorded an RBI fielder's choice to plate Enos in what would represent the game's final run.
- Nicholson had the best day at the plate for Oswego, with the only multiple-hit performance to go along with a game-high three RBI and a game-high tying two runs scored.
- Laker ace Nick DeMarco dominated the Red Dragon lineup over the course of eight innings of work. The senior fanned eight – including two of the looking variety – while surrendering just one earned run on five hits.
- Ronald Loomis was not in line for the save after the two-run Oswego eighth, but the sophomore struck out two without allowing a hit to close the victory.
