OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team completed the regular season sweep of Oneonta with a pair of victories at home on Saturday. Oswego walked-off in a pitcher's duel in the first game before controlling the entirety of game two.
THE BASICS
- Game 1 Result: Oswego 1, Oneonta 0
- Game 2 Result: Oswego 5, Oneonta 2
- Location: Laker Baseball Field – Oswego, N.Y.
- Records: Oswego 20-8 (11-1 SUNYAC) | Oneonta 13-16 (4-11 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Neither team was able to break onto the scoreboard until the bottom of the final inning, as Myles Felton led off with a hit by pitch.
- On the very next pitch, Felton moved into scoring position as a ball in the dirt scooted past the Oneonta catcher. A Justin Troelstra sacrifice bunt pushed the sophomore to third base with just one out.
- In the next at-bat, a pitch trickled past the catcher's right side and Felton took off for home. Felton's slight stumble down the third-base line made the play at home close, but Felton was able to slide his hand into the front of the plate before the catcher made the tag to secure the win.
- No relief pitchers saw action in the game, as Oswego's starter Brian Nolan and Oneonta ace Robert Ottaviano went the distance.
- Nolan recorded the shutout with only four hits allowed while fanning eight Red Dragon batters. The senior improved to 4-1 on the season.
- He also made a stellar play to prevent a scoring opportunity in the fifth inning with runners on first and second. Oneonta brought its leadoff hitter to the dish and the Laker southpaw fell behind 2-1 in the count. On the next pitch, the Red Dragon batter smoked a comebacker at Nolan, but quick reflexes preserved the shutout. Nolan ducked and fell to his backside to avoid being hit while stretching his glove above his head to snag the out and end the Red Dragon threat.
- Paul Tammaro, Ryan Enos and Rocco Leone accounted for the three Laker hits, with Leone and Enos registering doubles.
Game 2
- Oswego never trailed after scoring two runs in the third and another in the fourth to own a 3-0 lead. Oneonta was able to cut the deficit to one with a pair in the fifth, but Laker insurance tallies in the sixth and seventh put the game away.
- The Lakers' two runs in the second came in interesting fashion. Brandon Nicholson and Leone walked back-to-back to start the frame. During Casey Gruarin's at-bat, Leone got caught in a pickle and amid the hectic play, Oneonta was called for interference, allowing both runners to advance one base.
- A throwing error on the next play allowed Gruarin to reach first, Leone to advance to third and Nicholson to score the game's first run.
- With runners on the corners, Oswego executed a double steal to perfection, with Leone swiping home for a 2-0 advantage.
- In the fourth, Jonathan Luppens began the inning with a double to deep left-center field before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Gruarin.
- Dylan Frawley notched an RBI-single in the next at-bat to bring in Luppens and make it a 3-0 Laker lead.
- Enos produced a run by himself in the sixth, knocking a two-out double to left, stealing third and scoring on an errant throw by the catcher on the steal attempt.
- The final Laker run came from Nicholson, who crushed a no-doubter to left field, his first of the year.
- On the bump, Jake Terrill moved to 2-0 on the year in the start. The transfer-junior tossed five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
- Matt Bowman earned his first save of the season by throwing the final four frames. The senior was near perfect in the save, fanning five without surrendering a hit. Bowman's only disclaimer were a pair of free passes.
