Furious Laker Comeback Falls Just Short

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's lacrosse team nearly erased an eight-goal deficit against Geneseo at home on Saturday, eventually falling by just one score. Oswego scored nine of the game's last 11 goals during its furious comeback effort.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Geneseo 14, Oswego 13
  • Location: Laker Turf Stadium – Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: Geneseo 5-9 (2-2 SUNYAC)  |  Oswego 7-4 (2-2 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 12-4 midway through the third quarter, Oswego started clicking on offense, stringing together two, four-goal runs separated by just one Geneseo goal at 12:40 of the final period.
  • Evan Hollfelder was involved on each of the first four goals which came in the final 6:57 of the third. The junior bookended the spurt with goals, scoring an even-strength tally to ignite the run before closing it with an extra-man goal with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter.
  • Those goals sandwiched notches by Kyle Bacon and Tim Schof, each being assisted by Hollfelder.
  • After a Knight goal to start the fourth quarter made it a 13-8 game, Bacon and Weston Gray alternated tallies to account for the next Laker four-goal span.
  • Bacon scored a man-up at 11:16 and even at 5:10. Gray's goals both came at even-strength situations, finding the back of the net at 10:22 and 3:27 to cut the deficit back to one at 13-12.
  • Geneseo extended its margin to two with a man-down goal at 3:16 but Oswego answered at 1:28 on an unassisted goal from Gray to bring it back to a one-goal game at 14-13.
  • Kyle O'Connor won the faceoff following Gray's goal but a turnover eight-seconds later gave the Knights the ball with less than the 80-second possession clock left in regulation.
  • The Laker defense was not deterred, pressuring Geneseo for nearly 50 seconds before forcing a turnover with 28 seconds showing on the clock. Initially the referees granted the Knights a timeout but after conferring, decided the Geneseo player stepped on the boundary line prior to the timeout being called.
  • Oswego successfully cleared the ball and was awarded the ball at midfield after a foul on a loose ball with 12 seconds remaining. The Lakers were not able to register a shot attempt on the restart, however, allowing Geneseo to escape with the victory.
  • Bacon finished with a game-high for goals (5) and points (6) while Gray (4,1) and Hollfelder (2,3) each had five points.
  • Bobby Emerson and Tim Schof had one goal apiece, with Schof also distributing two assists.
  • Rounding out the Lakers with points on the afternoon were Dan Doolan (2) and John Petrelli (1), combining for three assists.
  • O'Connor won more than half of his faceoff chances, going 16-for-30 on the afternoon.
  • In goal, Kevin O'Donnell was critical to the Laker comeback effort, making 11 of his 13 saves in the final 30 minutes.
  • On defense, Mark McElroy and Brendon Closs led the Lakers with two caused turnovers apiece while Bryce Saba, Jeffrey Dangler and O'Connor each had one.
  • Petrelli corralled a career-high eight ground balls in the tilt, helping the Lakers to a 30-26 advantage in that category.
