Four Goals & Stingy 'D' Sends Lakers Past 'Roos

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's soccer team scored early and often in its final nonconference test of the season against SUNY Canton at home on Wednesday. Oswego scored three goals in the first 30 minutes to cruise to victory.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oswego 4, Canton 0
  • Location: Laker Turf Stadium – Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: Oswego 2-6-0  |  Canton 1-4-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Graisa Madden opened the scoring with her first tally of the year – and the eventual game-winner – at 10:25 off a pass from sophomore classmate Liz Myers.
  • Less than a minute later, Lynsey Roth settled a ball and used a few nifty moves to get free of her defender and bury her second goal of the year to make it a 2-0 Laker lead.
  • Later in the first half, Maggie Riordan was making a run down the left side of the field and was taken down just inside the box to be awarded a penalty kick. The sophomore did not waste the opportunity, scoring her first-collegiate goal at 27:56.
  • Joining Riordan with a first-collegiate goal was freshman Jackie Vigliotti, notching the only tally in the second half. The Syracuse, N.Y. native scored from inside the right-corner of the box, sending a shot across and tucking it inside the left post, just out of the goalie's reach.
  • In her third-career start, goalie Sophia Portalatin earned her first-career victory and first-collegiate shutout despite not facing an on-target attempt.
  • Oswego's defense protected its keeper, not allowing a single shot to be recorded by the Kangaroos.
  • The Lakers owned nearly every statistical category, including shots (36-0), shots on-goal (13-0) and corner kicks (8-0).
WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego has the weekend off before beginning its 2019 SUNYAC slate on the road when it faces two-time defending conference champion Geneseo at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.
