Lakers 2nd at ECWC, Grygas Wins 165 Title

ONEONTA, N.Y.
– Freshman Charlie Grygas took home the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference title at 165 with a fall (3:21) in the final and the team took second place as three other Lakers made the finals of their weight class.

  • Final Score:  124 points (Second)
  • Location:  Alumni Field House – Oneonta, N.Y.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Grygas started the day with the top seed and a bye, before scoring a major decision (14-4) over Sam Grey of Brockport.
  • He earned a 10-5 decision in the semifinal before a pin of Thomas Marrone of Oneonta in the final.
  • Fellow freshman John DeConno made his return to the mat an impressive one with a fall (1:22) in his first match and then scoring a 6-3 decision to make the final at 125 and take second.
  • Junior Christian Gramuglia had a solid day with a fall (6:14) in his first match, a 14-6 major decision in his second bout and an 8-1 decision in the semifinals to earn a spot in the final.
  • In the final, he lost a close 6-5 decision to top-seed Sam Schneider of Ithaca College to finish in second.
  • Junior Aidan Mathews was the final Laker to earn a spot in the final with a fall (4:25) and a 3-1 upset of second-seeded Justin Jones of Brockport before losing a close 3-1 decision and earning All-Conference.
  • A pair of Lakers took All-Conference at 133 with William Hardin II going 4-1 on the afternoon, including a pair of sudden victories in his last two bouts to finish third in the bracket.
  • Kaleb Carreon lost to fifth-seed Matt Maquet of Cortland before winning a 16-0 technical fall and wrestling Hardin well before falling in the 3-1 sudden victory to his teammate.  He earned fifth with a medical forfeit to also earn All-Conference.
  • Junior Isaac Mathews earned fourth at 174 with a 9-1 major decision in his opener before falling to the eventual champion.  He scored an 8-2 decision and then lost a narrow 1-0 decision to take All-Conference honors.
  • Freshman Toryan Jones and junior Caleb Beach narrowly missed joining their seven teammates who earned All-Conference honors.
WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego returns to the mat next Saturday with a home tri-match with Castleton and Brockport.  Action is slated for a 12 p.m. start time.
