OSWEGO, N.Y.
– Top seed Charlie Grygas earned a hard-fought 10-9 decision in the final to win the 174-pound bracket at the 55th Annual RIT Invitational.  Freshman Anthony Cascen (third) and senior Isaac Mathews (fifth) also made the podium at the end of the tournament for the Lakers as the team finished in ninth place out of 16 teams in attendance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Leading up to the final, Grygas won by fall in his opener (1:07), major decision (13-1) in the quarters, and a 3-2 decision in the semifinal.
  • Seeded fourth, Mathews won a pair of decisions (10-3, 6-2) to advance to the semifinals at 165 before suffering a defeat to the top seed from RIT.
  • Mathews drew the second-seeded wrestler in the consolation semifinal and lost a 4-1 decision in that match to finish fifth out of the 25 wrestlers in his bracket.
  • In the 197 bracket, Cascen won by fall (6:32) before a quarterfinal setback by decision (11-5) to the second seed in the tournament.
  • Cascen then won a major decision (18-6), an 8-4 decision over the bracket's third seed, and a 3-2 decision over the fourth seed in the consolation bracket.
  • In the third-place matchup against sixth seed Blake Ilges of Alfred State, Cascen won a 5-3 decision.
  • At 157, senior Logan McGloine lost his opener and then advanced three rounds into the consolation by way of a medical forfeit and two technical falls (17-0, 16-1) before a 12-5 decision ended his run.
  • Up at 165, Bryce Smith started with a victory by fall (1:37) before a major decision setback.
  • In the consolation, he took a 4-1 decision and then earned a fall 4:52 before a 5-1 decision knocked him out of podium contention.
  • In the lower weight classes, Brett Rosenberg, Billy Piatti, Kian Pacheco, Nicolai Celestain and Thomas Coll all went 1-2 on the day.
  • Junior Colby Harblin won an opening round 6-5 decision before dropping a pair of matchups.
  • For the 285's Anthony Vasquez alternated falls during the afternoon, winning his first and third matches (1:52 & 1:59) while Jaden Hall advanced with a medical forfeit before dropping his next two.

The Lakers travel to Penn State Behrend on December 11 for a 10 a.m. dual meet with the Lions.
