OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Wrestling team will travel to Elizabethtown (Pa.) this weekend for the 2022 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships. The Mideast is one of six regionals being contested in the nation this weekend and the top three wrestlers at each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division III Championships on March 11 & 12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The tournament this weekend features twenty teams in the region, including a pair ranked inside the top-30 in RIT (19) and Ithaca (26) according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association February 19 poll. The other teams in the field are Alfred State, Brockport, Centenary (NJ), Cortland, Elizabethtown, Elmira, Ithaca, Keystone, McDaniel, Muhlenberg, New Jersey City, Oneonta, Oswego, Penn College, Pitt-Bradford, Scranton, TCNJ and Ursinus.
Individually, 12 wrestlers appear in the top-15 of their respective weight classes in the rankings. The ranked wrestlers appear in the 125- (Caccamise, Brockport), 133- (Giordano, TCNJ), 149- (Merwin, Cortland & Beyer, Ithaca), 157- (Winters, RIT), 165- (Reyes, Johns Hopkins), 174- (Grygas, Oswego & Henry, Cortland), 184- (Chukwuezi, Ithaca & Surich TNCJ), 197- (Haddad, TCNJ) and 285- (Knapp, Brockport) weight classes.
Junior
Charlie Grygas who comes into the event with a 23-2 record this season headlines the Oswego lineup. This season, Grygas has won State and Conference titles at 174, including earning most Outstanding Wrestler at the New York State Wrestling Championship. The Delanson native's only setbacks this season have been nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 6 Michael Ross (J&W) and No. 7 Demitrius Henry (Cortland).
In 2020, Grygas won a 6-4 sudden victory in the Mideast Regional Consolation Final at 165 to earn the third bid to the NCAA Championships and ended the season with All-American honors.
The other returning wrestler from the 2020 Mideast Regional is senior
Isaac Mathews, who enters the tournament with a 14-10 record and All-Conference honors from the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference. The Wappingers native earned a podium finish at the RIT Invitational earlier in the year. In 2020, wrestling up at 174, an 8-4 decision eliminated Mathews in the consolation rounds.
A trio of Laker All-Conference wrestlers have reached double-digit wins this season in their respective weight classes. Senior
Logan McGloine (11 wins) takes the mat at 149, classmate
CJ Walz (12 wins) will represent Oswego at 141 and sophomore
Anthony Cascen (13 wins) will go at 197.
Sophomore
Bryce Smith also has 11 wins on the year and will be in the field at 184 while
Thomas Coll enters the tournament at 157 after a pair of wins in his last two matches. Junior
Paul Wehr will be in the 133- pound weight class for the Green and Gold.
On the bookends, freshmen
Matt Laubach and
Jaden Hall will compete in the 125 and 285 weight classes, respectively, for the Lakers.
In 2020, the Lakers scored 47 points to finish eleventh as a team out of the 18 schools competing at the Regional.
