NCAA Regional Preview, Lakers Head to Arcadia

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – The Oswego State Lakers Baseball team learned that they will be heading to Glendside Pennsylvania to compete for a national championship as the #2 seed in their bracket. The Lakers will take on the #3 seeded Blue Jays of Elizabethtown. Below is the preview of the Lakers first regional matchup. 

About The Elizabethtown Blue Jays: 

The Blue Jays have an overall record of  22-20 and finished their 2022 campaign with a record of 11-7 in the Landmark Conference. The Blue Jays are 11-5 at home and 7-5 in away games. Elizabethtown is only an hour and thirty minutes West of the host site in Glenside. 

In their conference tournament the Blue Jays took down the Catholic University Cardinals (29-12)  by a score of 18-8 and then defeated the Susquehanna University River Hawks (17-25)  in two straight games by scores of 7-5 and 8-3 in Scranton, Pa. Earning an automatic bid to the NCAA  tournament. 

This season the Blue Jays have ranked victories against La Roche, defeating them 1-0 in 8 innings and 6-4 in the second game of their double header. 

The Blue Jays are led by Ben Watson and Robbie Bertucio on the offensive and Eric Sipling and Tyler Dunbar on the mound. 

Watson in only 30 of the Blue Jays' 42 games played has a batting average of .408 in 98 at bats, a team-leading 38 RBI's, eight doubles, eight homeruns and only four total strikeouts. 

Bertucio has a team's second best batting average at .376 and has played and started in all 42 games for the Blue Jays. In 157 at bats, Bertucio has 59 hits, 31 runs scored, eight doubles, three homeruns, and a team's second best 32 RBI's. 

The pitching staff is led by the right-handed Senior of Lancaster, Pa. Eric Sipling. In 47.1 innings pitched for the Blue Jays, the senior has a team-leading ERA of 2.09 and a record of 6-1 overall this season. Sipling has allowed only 11 runs in the 47.1 innings. 

The Blue Jays Tyler Dunbar has pitched the majority of innings with 75.2 innings pitched this campaign. In those innings, Dunbar has faced 313 batters and allowed 95 hits, walked 24 batters, struck out 63, allowed 20 doubles, one triple and has not given up any homeruns this season. Dunbar has given up 58 runs with 39 of those being earned. Dunbar posts an ERA of 4.64. 

This is the first year that the Blue Jays have made the NCAA tournament since the 2017 season. In 2017 the Blue Jays took on Wheaton (Mass.) and fell 8-6 in the opening game, they then moved on to SUNY Maritime College and defeated the Privateer's by a score of 13-5. The Blue Jays were then bounced from the NCAA tournament by Alvernia by a score of 11-1.

This season the Lakers have an overall record of 29-10 and a record of 16-2 in the SUNYAC Conference. Oswego State posted a home record of 6-5, an away record of 13-4 and a 10-1 neutral site record. Oswego State is four hours and forty-six minutes North of the host site Glenside, Pa.

In the SUNYAC conference tournament hosted by the Lakers this past week, the Lakers took down the #4 seeded Cardinals of Plattsburgh by a score of 15-2 in the opening day. The Lakers then took on the #2 / #12 Cortland Red Dragons, in a heavyweight tilt the Lakers were ultimately defeated by a score of 11-9 after tying the contest from a Lukas Olsson grand slam 8-8 in the sixth inning. The Lakers then took on the #3 / #22 Brockport Golden Eagles. The Lakers were eliminated from the conference tournament by a score of 12-4. 

The #11 Lakers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA regional tournament earlier today as the #2 seed in their bracket. 

This season Oswego State has nationally ranked victories over #1 Salisbury, #5 SUNY Cortland, #11 Rowan, #13 Johns Hopkins University, #18 Shenandoah and #22 SUNY Brockport. All of the victories against these teams amounted to nine total wins over top-25 teams, five teams of which are ranked at the end of the regular season. 

The Lakers are led by offense from Paul Tammaro, Lukas Olsson, Ryan Enos and Kyle Lauria

Oswego State is led on the mound by Kieran Finnegan, Jacob Sanders, Thomas Pecchia and Anthony Van Fossen. Between these four pitchers the Lakers are 21-1. 

Tammaro has a team-leading batting average of .469 with 69 hits in 147 at bats. This batting average is good enough for sixth in the nation, as a leadoff hitter the Riverdale New Jersey native has done nothing short of his job with an On-base percentage of .558. 

Lukas Olsson has been on a tear as of late for the Lakers. In his previous ten games Olsson has eight homeruns, 30 RBI's and 15 runs scored. Olsson currently leads the team in homeruns (10) and RBI's (49).  

Ryan Enos continues his senior campaign in fashion. Enos has a batting average of .460 which is good enough for 11th in the country. Enos leads the team in doubles (16), slugging percentage (.766), hit by pitches (19), on-base percentage (.571) and is second in RBI's (48), runs (58), hits (63), homeruns (8) and is tied with Tammaro in total bases with 105. 

Kyle Lauria continues his high-caliber offensive and defensive play for the Lakers. Lauria leads the Lakers in triples (3), walks (25), second in at bats (144) and third in runs (44), hits (50), doubles (11) and RBI's (45).  

Finnegan leads the Lakers on the mound with 65.2 innings pitched, an ERA of 2.47, 56 strikeouts, 262 batters faced, and only allowing 18 earned runs. 

Jacob Sanders is 6-0 with 35.1 innings pitched, and ERA of 3.82, 26 strikeouts, 128 batters faced, and has only allowed 15 earned runs. 

Thomas Pecchia is 4-0 with 33.0 innings pitched, an ERA of 3.00, 127 batters faced, and has only allowed 11 earned runs.

Anthony Van Fossen is 4-1  with 57.0 innings pitched, 38 strikeouts, 221 batters faced, and has an ERA of 4.74. 

This posts the seventh straight season the Lakers have made an appearance in the NCAA Championship tournament.
