ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Oswego State Wrestling team competed in the 21st Annual New York State Intercollegiate Open on Saturday. Among several podium finishes for the Lakers, Charlie Grygas defended his New York State Intercollegiate title at 174 pounds, which he first won in November 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Grygas' path to the title included three matches after he received a bye in round one. He defeated Chase Kranitz (Buffalo) in the quarterfinal with a 6-5 decision. He then faced Dillon Sheehy (Army West Point) and blew past him in an 8-4 decision. This set him up with Gunner Filipowicz (USMAPS) in the final. Grygas had his most successful match of the day, with a 13-4 major decision to secure him the 174-pound title.

Tyler Rossini went 4-1 on the day in the 149-pound weight class, ending with a third place podium finish. Rossini had victories over Colby D`Andria (SUNY Oneonta), Hassan Dobbins (NCCC) twice, and Sean Peterson (Alfred State College) en route to his third-place finish.

Michael Santore finished fifth in the 133-pound weight class, going 3-2. He defeated Joseph Powers (SUNY Cortland) by major decision, Spencer Maja (SUNY Brockport) by tech fall, and Naman Basin (Hunter College) by fall in his journey to the fifth place finish.

Steven Felice also finished fifth in his weight class (165), going 3-2 on the day. He earned decision victories over Cortez Henderson (NCCC) and John Hecht (Ithaca College), which set up a match against teammate Thomas Coll. Felice was awarded the win due to medical forfeit. Coll went 2-3 on the day en route to a sixth place finish, with victories over Elijah Timbrouck (Alfred State College) and Esdras Ramos (SUNY Oneonta).

Anthony Vasquez had two fall victories over Timothy Mcgrath (SUNY Cortland) and Kenny Jackson (SUNY Oneonta) en route to a sixth place finish in the 285-pound weight class. Vasquez went 2-3 on the day.

Other notable Oswego performances included Kaleb Carreon (141), who went 2-2, William Piatti (141), who also went 2-2, and David Hammerle (149), who went 1-2.

In total, Oswego had six wrestlers place on the podium in their respective weight classes.

The Lakers will return to Rochester to face RIT in the Gordon Field House on January 26.
