Women's Basketball Drops Conference Game to Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. –The SUNY Oswego Lakers took on the Buffalo State Bengals on Saturday afternoon in a Sunday SUNYAC match-up. Cold shooting plagued the Lakers in this road loss to the Bengals, 60-50.

The Lakers opened up their second game in two days struggling offensively. SUNY Oswego was able to produce good looks at the basket but was not knocking down as many as they would have liked. From three-point range, the Lakers were only 1-6, well below their season average. To start the second quarter, Buffalo State opened a fifteen-point lead over the Lakers forcing a time-out. SUNY Oswego had a few good looks after the timeout but was not able to capitalize and once again sent the Bengals to the foul line. Chastin Giles ended the drought with a three-pointer assisted by Zhane Holmes. That was followed by a steal and layup by Logan Castiglione as the Lakers tried to cut into the Bengals lead before halftime. At the break, Oswego was down 33-21.

The offensive struggles continued for Oswego in the second half until Macey DeOrdio sank a layup for the first basket of the half. After a jumper from Zhane Holmes, Karleigh Leo sent home a three cutting the Bengal lead down to ten. Chastin Giles produced a steal on the next position and found Elaina Johnson for a knockdown jumper taking us to the first media timeout. After outscoring the Bengals by one in the third, Oswego started the fourth quarter down eleven with just ten minutes to play. The Lakers did not score until almost five minutes into the fourth. Shania Iglesias and Elaina Johnson made back-to-back buckets for the Lakers cutting the deficit to nine with less than five minutes remaining. With a minute left to play, Elaina Johnson hit two free throws cutting the Buffalo State lead to just six. The SUNY Oswego comeback attempt would fall short, unfortunately, and they fell to the Bengals on the road after shooting just 28% from the floor.
