OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Men's Soccer hosted a new conference foe, the Canton Kangaroos in the second SUNYAC matchup of the season. The Lakers came out hot, notching their first goal of the game in the first two minutes of the 1
st half. Oswego maintained offensive possession for the majority of the first half, while Canton struggled to break it out of their zone. Despite multiple quality scoring chances, the score would remain 1-0 heading into halftime. The second half would start much like the first, with the Lakers on offense. Two quick goals early in the 2
nd half would give Oswego a comfortable 3-0 lead over the Kangaroos.
THE BASICS
Final Score:
Oswego
3 (6-1-2, 1-1 SUNYAC)
Canton
0 (3-8-1, 0-2 SUNYAC)
Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego, N.Y.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A very passive Canton squad would give the Lakers room to maintain possession off the kickoff. An excited Oswego offense wasted no time gaining entry and drawing a corner kick in the opening minute of play. A nice cross-kick from
Ian Husselbeck would find its way over the head of opposing goaltender Nolan Sullivan at 1:49, putting the Lakers on the board early. Oswego continued this momentum, keeping the Kangaroos in their defensive zone for the following 13 minutes. A notable scoring chance from midfielder
Benjamin Brooks at 18:23 would just barely miss the hands of Sullivan's but would unfortunately be stopped by the top left corner post. As the first half got underway the Roos began to settle in on defense but would struggle to take a turn on offense, while Oswego continued to generate quality scoring chances. A miscommunication between the Canton defensemen would give the Lakers an optimal scoring chance in the final 2 minutes of 1
st half, but the score would remain 1-0 heading into halftime.
The second half would start much like the first, with the Lakers on offense. A foul on the Roos would award Junior
Scout Mccumiskey and graduate student
Kyle Gehnrich back-to-back penalty kicks that would both, unfortunately, be blocked and cleared out by a wall of Canton players. A quick turn on offense for the Kangaroos would end in a heavy collision between first year Laker
Ryan Bullis and a Canton forward around the 37:00 mark, stopping play momentarily. As play resumed, Oswego made their way down the field once again. An impressive series of saves by Nolan Sullivan would come to an end as Sophomore
Tajay Ellis tallied a 2
nd goal for the Lakers at the 60:20 mark. Despite a comfortable 2-goal lead, a determined Laker squad would not let up. Adding a third unanswered goal by junior
Jason Wuytack, to the scoreboard just 5 minutes later, at 64:59. Oswego maintained offensive possession as the clock ticked down, closing out today's match with a 3-0 victory over the Canton Kangaroos.
