Oswego Comes Up Short Against Oneonta

OSWEGO, NY - The Women's Basketball team hosted the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons on Tuesday for their first SUNYAC game of the season.

THE BASICS

Oswego 45 (2-3. 0-1 SUNYAC)

Oneonta 58 (3-3, 1-0 SUNYAC)

Max Ziel Gymnasium | SUNY Oswego | Oswego, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED
Oneonta secured possession off the tip-off to begin the game but missed their initial scoring opportunity as Oswego's Giavanna White-Principio quickly intercepted the ball. The game began with high energy as both teams exchanged possession without scoring. After nearly two minutes of scoreless play, the Red Dragons broke through with a layup, immediately followed by a jumper from White-Principio to tie the game. Another minute and a half passed before Shania Iglesias sank a layup to give the Lakers their first lead, 4-2. Oneonta quickly regained a slim lead with a layup and a jumper, but Iglesias responded with a three-pointer to put the Lakers ahead by one. The game remained fast-paced, with both teams racing up and down the court. Midway through the quarter, Macey DeOrdio tied the game at 10-10 with a free throw and a driving layup. However, Oswego's aggressive defense led to multiple fouls, which Oneonta capitalized on, pulling ahead. The quarter concluded with the Lakers trailing 12-21.

Oswego opened the second quarter by forcing an Oneonta turnover, leading to a jumper by Sydney Hoefs for two points. The Lakers worked to narrow the gap, with DeOrdio adding two free throws and a layup, bringing the score to 18-22. However, the Red Dragons found their rhythm and went on an 11-point run over the next six minutes. The Lakers struggled to respond but managed to add six points, courtesy of Iglesias in the final two minutes of the half. Despite their efforts, the Lakers entered halftime down 25-33.

The Lakers had the opening possession of the third quarter, but both teams struggled to score through four changes of possession. After a minute and a half, DeOrdio broke the drought with a layup. Both teams traded three-pointers shortly after, bringing the score to 30-36. Oswego made key defensive adjustments, effectively limiting Oneonta's scoring opportunities for the rest of the quarter. The Lakers chipped away at the deficit and ended the third quarter trailing by just five points, 35-40.

Oswego started the fourth quarter strong, with Logan Nyemchek hitting a jumper and Iglesias adding a layup shortly after. The Lakers gained momentum, wearing down the Red Dragons as they closed the gap. With about eight minutes remaining, Hoefs' layup brought Oswego within three points, 41-44. However, Oneonta regained their composure, finding a second wind to hold off the Lakers' surge. In a final effort to gain possessions as time dwindled, the Lakers committed multiple fouls, giving Oneonta critical free-throw opportunities. Despite their relentless effort, Oswego fell short, with the game ending 45-58 in favor of the Red Dragons.
