OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Hockey returned to Deborah F. Stanley this evening, looking to continue their three-game win streak and to secure two more SUNYAC points against the Canton Kangaroos. The Lakers were determined to undo the 1-0 loss they suffered to the Roos earlier this season and they did just that. Early scoring excitement from defenseman Rheya Zemlak gave Oswego an offensive edge that carried throughout the entire game, allowing them to pull away with a 3-1 win over Canton in the first contest of the weekend.
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
From the faceoff, the Lakers were ready to rumble. Sophomore defenseman Rheya Zemlak wasted no time, notching the first goal of the evening from the high slot just 1:50 into play. A few minutes later the Lakers would earn their first powerplay of the game at the 6:49 mark of the 1st but would not finish on any of their scoring chances. As the rest of the period unfolded, Oswego settled in, connecting on defensive zone breakouts and at the offensive end of the ice. Towards the end of the period the Lakers would find themselves on the penalty kill after a roughing penalty was drawn by Tilly Pethrick at 14:24. The period would close out with the scoreline remaining at 1-0 in Oswego's favor.
The second period would open with a faceoff win and offensive surge by Freshman Erika Parenti and her linemates. As the first few minutes of play got underway, the Lakers maintained possession in the o-zone and tested Canton net-minder Molly Lenihan with a variety of shots and passing plays. At the 15:44 mark forward Tessa Mucha buried a five-hole goal off a rebound generated by Parenti, extending Oswego's lead to 2-0. The last few minutes of second period play would shift in the favor of the Kangaroos, as they gained some offensive momentum and kept the Lakers in their defensive zone.
The final frame of play would prove to be the most back-and-forth of the game. Both teams would trade offensive possession and shots on net, but Oswego would find themselves on the penalty kill after a line-change miscommunication resulting in a too many players on ice penalty. The Lakers shut down the Kangaroos for much of their powerplay, but Canton forward Danika Lalonde snuck one through the legs of Lexi Levy 9:56 into the third period. This goal ignited a fire underneath the Laker bench, giving them some extra jump and motivation. The Kangaroos did not let up, but Oswego responded well, earning another powerplay and an empty netter goal in the last minutes of play. The Lakers closed out the third period with a 3-1 win over Canton in the first contest of the weekend. Junior goaltender Lexi Levy had another dominant game in net for the Lakers with 26 saves (.963 S%).
