HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The first three innings were scoreless for both teams.
In the fourth inning, Mt. Aloysius scored off of a ground ball single past first base, which put them on the board 1-0. With bases loaded, a ground ball was fielded by third base, the throw to home beat the runner, but the catcher did not have a foot on the plate which allowed the runner to score. Later, the catcher threw to third after the runner was leading off, but the ball got away, allowing the runner to score. The fourth run for Mt. Aloysius came from a line drive down the first baseline.
In the top of the sixth, with a runner on third, the Mounties scored yet again after a ground ball was hit to the pitcher who threw to first for the out. After the pitcher threw to first, the runner on third took off for home; First base threw home but the runner beat the throw. It was finally the Lakers turn to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second,
Mattison Phinney hit a line drive to left center field that brought in
Ellie Mahoney for their first run.
The final inning saw no score change, and the game concluded 5-1.
Game 2
With another game starting with three full scoreless innings, Oswego took advantage of a wild pitch to score in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Phinney hit a line drive up the middle, past the center fielder, which allowed them to get to third. With two outs, a grounder made out number three, stranding Phinney on third. With a runner on second, the Beacons hit a line drive to right center which put them on the board, tying up the game. Shortly after, a dropped pop fly to second base allowed the Beacon runner on third to score.
At the top of the sixth,
Kylie Detz hit a single. She then proceeded to steal second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. However, the Lakers were unable to drive her in to make what would have been the tying run. A double to center field brought in a runner which pushed UMass Boston further ahead, 3-1.
Going into Oswego's final chance to make a comeback, the Beacons shut down any glimmer of hope by getting three quick outs to end the game.
