HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
Â
-
Shearer allowed his first hit of the game in the top of the second, but his outfield held strong, catching two pop-flys. A strikeout would close out the top of the inning for the Lakers as they headed back to home plate, to try and put some runs on the board.
Â
-
A couple of miscommunications from the Spartans led to singles from both Owen Parliament and Tishawn Featherstone, but a grounder down the third base line turned into a double-play, ending the Oswego run.
Â
-
Oswego started the third with a strikeout, followed by a routine throw-out at first, and after a hit dropped into left field, Shearer threw the next batter out at first, closing out the top of the third.
Â
-
Shearer continued to get things done in the top of the fourth for Oswego, that was until a Spartans homer went just past the center field wall. Luckily for the Lakers, one run was all they gave up in the fourth, and they entered the bottom of the inning down 0-1.
Â
-
Jelani Hamer started things off with a base hit, and after a walk and a strikeout, Hamer successfully stole third base, putting him in scoring position. Jacob Levine would then hit a grounder down the third base line, sending home Hamer, tying up the game at 1-1.Â
Â
-
An infield fly-out would start off the fifth for the Spartans, followed closely by a throw-out at second. A base hit and two walks would then load the bases, and a grounder past Oswego first baseman Owen Parliament would secure them two more runs. A ground out to first would close out the top of the fifth, as the Lakers trailed once again, this time, by a score of 3-1.
Â
-
Nick Cody came in at the top of the sixth to relieve Jonah Shearer. A stolen base added to the damage for Oswego, and a ground-out advanced the Spartan runner to third base, but the Lakers were able to escape the top of the sixth allowing only one more run.
Â
-
The bottom of the sixth started out with a Tishawn Featherstone fly-out, followed by a pair of walks, putting two runners on base for the Lakers. Blake VanDreason hit an RBI single, but Jacob Levine got caught between second and third in a pickle, eventually leading to a second out. VanDreason then stole second and third, putting himself in a scoring position with 2 outs. After walking a third runner in the inning, the Spartans made a pitching change. A dropped first pitch from the catcher would allow the Lakers to score another run, and advance a runner to third. A fly-out would do it for the sixth, as the Spartans held the 4-3 lead over the Lakers.
Â
-
Jai Sharma made his first appearance of the season on the mound. A couple of routine fielding plays from the Lakers would close out the top of the seventh, as Sharma struck out his last batter, allowing zero runs in his first inning of the season.
Â
-
Jai Sharma would remain on the mound for the eighth inning. A sac-fly into right field would advance a Case Western runner to third, after stealing second, putting him in scoring position. Another sac-fly to the same spot would bring that runner home, giving the Spartans a fifth run, and extending their lead to 2. A strikeout would send the Lakers to the dugout, down 5-3.
Â
-
An error from the Oswego defense allowed the leadoff batter to get on base to start the ninth, and ignited the move for a pitching change to close out the game. Devon Campbell came in, appearing for the first time this season for the Lakers. An infield bunt single would advance a runner, and put a second runner on base for the Spartans, with no outs. A hit up the middle would bring in two runners for the Spartans, increasing their lead to 4 runs. Campbell struck out the next batter, as Jelani Hammer tagged a runner out at third to end the top of the ninth.
