HOW IT HAPPENED
After a connected warmup, the Lakers came out ready to go, with an opening draw controlled by senior Isabella Lembo. The Golden Flyers would regain possession quickly, after a turnover in their defensive zone. A clear from Naz goaltender Allie Klestinec would send the Flyers on offense, getting a quick shot off the transition. Their following shooting attempts would be rejected by Oswego netminder Sarah Kamide and composed zone breakout would give the Lakers their first run on offense. Sophomore Alexis Hill would open scoring notching the first goal of the game at 7:01. Golden Flyer Maggie Vay responded almost immediately, scoring a goal of her own at the 6:12 mark. Hill would control the following draw, sending Sela Wiley down the field on a breakaway, scoring a second goal for the Lakers at 5:55. Nazareth would settle in, in the Oswego d-zone but a connected defensive effort and another successful clear by Kamide would give the Lakers some running room. Junior Julia Quirk would score her first goal of the game off transition at 3:39, making the score 3-1. Nazareth midfielder Sophia Scialdone found a way to add to the tally in the final minute, but the Lakers would not waiver, as Sela Wiley closed out the 1st quarter with a goal with just 14 seconds remaining, making the scoreline 4-2 in Oswego's favor.
The Lakers would carry the offensive momentum they created throughout the first quarter, into the opening minutes of the second. A seamless transition from midfield would give them some time to set up. A patient passing play would give Quirk a prime shooting opportunity, on which she would capitalize, scoring a fifth goal at 11:00. The Lakers would maintain possession off the following draw, awarding Madison Davis her first of the game, improving the score to 6-2 just less than a minute later at the 10:19 mark. Just past the halfway point of the quarter, the physicality of the game started to pick up, but Julia Quirk found the back of the net once more securing a third-unanswered goal for the Lakers at 7:44. A foul called on Davis would give Nazareth a man-up advantage on which the Golden Flyers would capitalize on at 6:54 and then once more at 5:14 pushing a score of 7-4. In the final minutes of the penalty-filled quarter, both teams would trade offensive zone time, but the scoreboard would remain unphased heading into halftime.
As the third quarter commenced, the Lakers would not let up, controlling the draw and adding an 8th goal to the tally just 30 seconds in at 14:30. Nazareth would respond well, gaining offensive entry on the following play. A hard shot off the post from Golden Flyer Emily Paddock would be picked up and transitioned by Wiley. A fourth goal from Julia Quirk at 12:28 would extend the Lakers' lead to 9-4. The Flyers would answer with a goal just a minute later at 11:24. Alexis Hill would win the next draw, but Scialdone would turn it over and set up on offense, creating multiple shooting opportunities for Naz. Kamide stood tall blocking multiple consecutive shots. Her following clear attempt would unfortunately be intercepted by the Golden Flyers sending them back on offense, giving Kate Metzler a chance, making the score 10-6. Nazareth would maintain possession in the remaining minutes of 3rd quarter play scoring a 7th goal at 0:21.
In the opening minutes of the final quarter both teams would trade shots on net and offensive zone time, but the penalty-filled nature of the second quarter would persist. Metzler struck again at 11:49 on a man-up advantage closing Oswego's lead to 10-8. A timeout called by Oswego head coach Britt Howard would give the Lakers some time to breathe and reconvene. This would pay off as Quirk scored off the ensuing draw at 10:40, regaining a 3-goal lead. Oswego and Nazareth would trade goals, making the score 12-11 as the clock ticked down. Sela Wiley would fight through a double team effort from the Golden Flyers to maintain possession in the final 22 seconds. An outstanding 13 save performance from goaltender Sarah Kamide, as well as an impressive 6 goal game from Julia Quirk helped Oswego pull away with a 12-11 win over the Golden Flyers.
