Grygas and Goss NCAA

Goss and Grygas Compete at Day 1 of the NCAA Championships

LA CROSSE, WIGabe Goss and Charlie Grygas of the SUNY Oswego Wrestling team were in action this afternoon at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

Goss vs Kyler Romero of Wartburg College at 141 lbs.
After a slow start to the match, Goss took a shot at a take down with thirty seconds remaining in the first period. That shot came up empty and the score was still 0-0 after one period.
In the second period, Goss started on top but suffered a reversal. He escaped to a reversal but was down 2-1. In the final minute of the third, Romero took down Goss making the score 5-1 heading to the third period.
Goss started on the bottom in the third period hoping to work an escape that came with 1:15 left in the period. Goss was taken down one more time, escaped and was ultimately taken down 12-3 by his opponent. Major decision.

Grygas (7), vs Khalil Mitchell of Averett University. At 174 lbs.
After the first, Grygas was up 3-0. Charlie started on top in the second keeping his opponent down and building his riding time. After an escape, Grygas went right back with another take down along with a near fall.
With Grygas up 11-1 to start the third, the two wrestlers started neutral. With one minute remaining, Grygas completed another take down and finished with additional riding time for a 15-2 major decision.

Goss vs Sam Lorenz of Wisconsin La Crosse
Goss started his second match of the day with a take down where he was in control on top for more than two minutes of the period.
After starting the second period down, Goss completed a reversal with a minute remaining to go up 5-0. He maintained control for the rest of the period.
The third period started neutral. The two wrestlers exchanged take down opportunities, but neither were able to score in the third and Goss won, 6-0 by decision.

Goss vs Victor Perlleshi of Johnson and Wales
To start the first period, Goss shot for a take down that was defended well resulting in a stalemate. Perlleshi would get a take down on Goss, but he escaped easily. After another take down and escape, Goss completed a take down of his own cutting the deficit to 5-6 after one period.
Goss would start down in the second escaping easily once again. The wrestlers remained neutral for most of the period, then Goss was taken down to a near fall and his opponents lead ballooned to 13-7 with one period remaining.
Goss started up in the third needing to score in the final two minutes. Goss was aggressive and battled until the end but fell by major decision, 24-9 ending the NCAA run for Goss.
 
Grygas vs Zane Mulder of Wartburg  College
Grygas was taken down to start this one falling behind 3-0 early. Grygas escaped but not before a 4 count near fall. He entered the second period trailing 7-1.
Starting the second period up, Charlie was looking to score and make a comeback over Mulder. After defending multiple take down attempts, Grygas tried a few of his own but entered the final two minutes down 8-1.
The wrestlers started neutral and with a minute remaining Grygas got his first take down of the match, but it was not enough, and he fell by a score of 13-4 in the quarterfinals.

Grygas vs Joe Chapman of  Guard
Grygas started with a quick take down of his opponent. After an escape, Grygas was taken down in the final minute of the period, he was able to escape to keep the score tied 4-4.
In the second period, Grygas started down and capitalized with an escape. Charlie defended take down attempts well in the second and took a 5-4 lead into the third.
In the final two minutes, the two wrestlers were tied at 5 with a minute remaining. Then with thirty seconds left, Grygas completed a take down and secured a win with a score of 8-6.

WHAT'S NEXT
Charlie Grygas will be back in action tomorrow morning in the consolation bracket looking to earn a third-place overall finish.
