OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Soccer returned home to Laker Turf Stadium to host the SUNY Canton Kangaroos in their second SUNYAC matchup of the season. After tying Oneonta in their conference opener, the Lakers came out excited to earn their first SUNYAC win. From the kickoff, Oswego controlled the pace of play, not hesitating to put shots on net. This energy would award the Lakers with the first tally of the game and yield three more unanswered goals before halftime. The intermission gave the Roos some time to rest and regroup, but Oswego did not hesitate to pick up where they left off, attaching 2 more goals to the scoreline in the early minutes of the second half. A valiant effort from Canton would keep the Lakers from producing any quality offensive chances in the final minutes, but it would just not be enough to counter Oswego's dominance.
THE BASICS
Final Score:
Oswego 6 (4-3-2, 1-0-1 SUNYAC),
Canton 0 (0-10-0, 0-2-0 SUNYAC)
Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego, N.Y.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Kangaroos kicked off the match with a boot into Oswego's zone, but the Lakers wasted no time stepping up, earning their first offensive opportunity in the early minutes of the first half. A nice cross ball attempt by senior Nicolette Joannou carriedjust wide of the left post, returning possession to the Canton defense. An unsuccessful clear by the Roos was collected by the Lakers and passed down low to Courtney Key in Canton's box. Managing to corral the ball and fire a shot under heavy defensive pressure, Key would be narrowly rejected by the cross bar. Unphased by their failed offensive efforts, Oswego continued to direct their attention to scoring. This determination payed off, as a heavy shot sent in by Olivia Davis evaded the hands of netminder Mackenzie Ryan on the following play. Notching the initial tally of game, 14:17 into the first half. A few minutes later, Kaylee Elliot would one-time a pass sent across by Brianna Winkler, adding a second goal to the board at the 18:10 mark. Oswego did not let up on the next possession, attaching a 3rd goal to the scoreline, extending their lead to 3-0 halfway through the first. As Canton began to tire, the Roos shifted to a more passive approach to defense. This adjustment helped them survive a series of scoreless minutes towards the end of the half. This drought would eventually be corrected by Laker Sabrina Schmitt with a fourth goal for Oswego heading into halftime.
The intermission would allow the Kangaroos to rest and regroup, but the dominant Lakers pickws up right where they left off on offense, collecting a fifth goal just 0:56 seconds into the second half. As play began to unfold, Oswego continued to settle into their offensive formation, peppering Ryan with an array of shots. A few substitutions made by the Lakers awarded their starters some rest and generated an opportunity to display their squad's depth, as senior Jillian Brosnan tacked on a sixth goal off her first touches of the game. Despite their sizeable deficit, the Roos did not make it easy on the Lakers following their 6th score, containing play to the midfield and challenging hard in 1-on-1 battles. A valiant effort by Canton would make it difficult for Oswego to produce any quality chances in the final minutes of the game, but it would not be enough to catch a successful break on offense. As the clock expired, the Lakers would pull away with a commanding 6-0 victory over the SUNY Canton Kangaroos.
