HOW IT HAPPENED
Oswego weathered early pressure after Utica opened the scoring on a power play just 3:19 into the first. The Lakers quickly countered, capitalizing on their own man advantage when
Tommy Bannister finished a passing sequence from
Matt McQuade and
Travis Baker at 6:17. Less than a minute later,
Colin Vassallo pushed Oswego ahead, converting off feeds from McQuade and
Raymond Perrault to make it 2–1.
Utica drew even before intermission, but the Lakers reclaimed momentum in the second. With Oswego on the penalty kill, McQuade produced the highlight of the night for the Lakers forcing a turnover and beating the goaltender clean for a short-handed, unassisted tally at 15:52. The play gave Oswego a 3–2 edge and briefly quieted the crowd.
But the third belonged to the home side. Utica tied the game with a short-handed goal at 2:26, then grabbed the lead for good when Preston Brighton finished a net-front opportunity at 9:25. The Lakers generated looks late, including a shot off the pipe from Baker during a six-on-five push, but couldn't find the equalizer. An empty-net tally in the final half-minute sealed the result.
