Lakers Remain Perfect in Conference with Senior Day Win of Plattsburgh

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Women's Lacrosse hit the field this afternoon to celebrate their 12 graduating seniors. Determined to continue their, so far, undefeated SUNYAC campaign, they came out ready to push the pace against the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals. A lucky bounce off the opening draw would award the Cardinals the first possession and goal of the game, but as Oswego settled in, they managed to mount a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter. In attempts to chip away at their 4-goal deficit, Plattsburgh came out swinging in the early minutes of the 2nd but would quickly find themselves scrambling to respond to 4 unanswered goals by the Lakers before halftime. After allowing the Cards to have the last laugh in the second, Oswego did not hesitate to extend their lead, entering the final frame up 14-5. Not ready to lay down yet, Plattsburgh continued to fight for every chance on net in the 4th quarter, but it just would not be enough to combat the final 19-7 scoreline.

THE BASICS

Final Score:

Oswego 19 (10-2, 6-0 SUNYAC)

Plattsburgh 7 (3-9, 1-5 SUNYAC)

Location: Laker Turf Stadium | Oswego, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A lucky bounce off the opening draw would award the Cardinals with the first turn on offense. Despite some promising defense from the Lakers, Plattsburgh found a way to bury the first of the game just 0:57 seconds in. Oswego would respond to the Cards' scoring initiative with a goal of their own by Cassidy Croce, on the following possession. After a successful draw control, senior Julia Quirk would make good on a free-position opportunity, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead at the 12:00 mark. Unlike Quirk, Plattsburgh would come up empty-handed on their free-position chance, turning the ball back over to Oswego. Once set up on offense, it would only take a couple passes for the Lakers to find senior Kathryn Salamida out front for another quick tally at 9:48. A solid stick check by Julia Gorecki, on the next play, would disrupt Plattsburgh's rhythm, sending Julia Quirk quickly up field off a lengthy clear. As Quirk entered the Cardinals zone, a nice give-and-go pass from Mackenzie Winn would leave her undefended, putting a fourth goal behind netminder Mae Olshansky at 6:24. As the final beginning minutes began to tick down, the Lakers did not let up, extending their lead to 5-1 just before the 2nd quarter.

In attempts to chip away at their 4-goal deficit, Plattsburgh came out swinging in the early minutes of the second, adding a goal just at 13:04. As Oswego settled back in on defense a physical effort by Alexis Hill landed her in the penalty box, but she wasted no time redeeming herself with a sixth goal for the Lakers at the 10:58 mark. First year Aubrianna Green followed up Hill's attempt with a tally of her own just 0:48 seconds later at 9:46. A following draw control and fast break by Cardinal, Lillian Gilroy, would be halted by a tripping foul, but her free-position attempt would be shut out by Oswego goaltender Alana Iacovissi. Oswego kept their foot on the gas, continuing to run away with a dominant 9-2 lead thanks to a hat trick goal notched by Julia Quirk at 5:26. Despite a lockdown defensive effort by the Lakers, a persistent Cardinal squad would have the last laugh in the remaining minutes, keeping the score to 10-4 heading into halftime.

Undeterred by Plattsburgh's late offensive surge, Oswego did not hesitate to extend their lead, securing two goals in the first 2 minutes. A following draw control by Mackenzie Winn would be turned around by the Cardinals, who would use their free- position to their advantage at 9:08, making it 12-5. Senior Ashley Casserly promptly answered with a high-to-low attempt only a minute later at the 8:09 mark. Plattsburgh attackman, Erica Dickinson, would be charged with green card on the next play, granting Mackenzie Winn with a man-up goal at 7:12, concluding scoring for the remainder of the quarter.

The final frame would open, once again, in favor of the Lakers, cashing in on their man-advantage with a goal scored by Kylie Fritton at 13:42. Not ready to lay down just yet, Gilroy would offset her penalty, answering Fritton's tally with a fifth Cardinal goal at the 13:24 mark. Eager to regain a running clock, Oswego worked to improve the scoreline to 16-6 at 11:18. The next handful of minutes would go scoreless as both teams traded possession, but the drought would eventually be broken by Cardinal Cynthia Barnosky with 5:10 left in regulation. Despite their 9-goal lead, the Lakers remained hungry, pocketing 3 consecutive goals in the final minutes, to close out their Senior Day contest with a 19-7 victory over the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals.
