HOW IT HAPPENED
Oswego came out impressive, controlling the puck for the majority of the first period. Although they handled the puck a lot, Oswego wasn't able to find too many open shots. They also made this true for Canton. Neither team found too many open lanes or opportunities on offense. The shots that did occur for Canton were cleaned up by
Gavin McCarthy nicely. The Lakers had their first power play opportunity in the 18th minute but weren't able to capitalize on it. During the power play, they let off two shots but two quality shots. We are all knotted at 0 after 20.
Canton, with a sluggish offensive first period, wanted to come out a bit more aggressive in the second period and that they did. In the fourth minute, Canton's Niko Schoner found the back of the net off a rebound. It was the game's first goal and a big one for Canton as they now led by one. Oswego has answered well season long and they did it yet again after the Roo goal. They turned it up offensively and were firing shot after shot.
Drake Semrad had the equalizer for Oswego and it was a brand new game. The assists went to
Aidan Cooper and
Brandon Cohen. Both teams with a goal in the period were content with just one and on to the third quarter we went.
Early into the third Oswego had a power play opportunity but it again was killed off by the Roo's. In the seventh minute, Brayden Fryfogle for Canton and Jonathon Balah for Oswego got into some simultaneous trouble, and it was now 4-4 hockey. The 4-4 sparked something for Canton and the difference-making goal came off the stick of Colton Alexander to give the Roo's a 2-1 lead. Oswego knew they had to score and they had to score fast. 10 shots in 6 minutes were the tally for Oswego but Canton netminder Trey Miller just wouldn't let a Laker shot get past him. Oswego pulled McCarthy to get an offensive advantage, but Canton went on to score two empty net goals to close this one out.
WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego will have to put this loss behind them as they have a tough challenge next Friday. They will head over to Geneva, NY to face off against the premier Division III hockey team the Hobart Statesmen. Start time for this game is set for 7:00pm on Hobart's ice.
