Lakers Secure 14-13 Comeback Win Over Rams

OSWEGO, N.Y. – On the hunt for their fifth straight win, Oswego State Men's Lacrosse was fired up for today's out of conference matchup against the Farmingdale State Rams. Similar to the Lakers' last opponent, Utica, the Rams opened the game with early dominance, striking just 0:34 seconds in and building a lead before Oswego battled back to tie the first quarter up 4-4. Unbothered, Farmingdale seized full control in the 2nd quarter, unleashing a four-goal burst and garnering a comfortable 10-4 advantage entering halftime. But Oswego stormed out of the intermission with renewed energy, capitalizing on a man-up chance and stringing together a massive offensive run to erase their deficit, heading into the final frame tied 11-11. The Lakers kept pushing, twice extending their lead, but Farmingdale clawed back to even the score 13-13 with under a minute remaining in regulation. With overtime on the horizon, Oswego pounced on a turnover in the midfield, producing an odd-man rush on which Ryan Behringer fed Gavin Angelo for a cross-crease one-timer to secure a dramatic 14-13 victory for the Lakers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A physical opening faceoff would be won by the Rams who wasted no time getting on the board, scoring the first of the day 0:34 seconds in. The second draw would be more evenly played as both teams fought hard for possession. Another quick turn on offense for the Rams would be disrupted by junior Sheamus Devine, finding his legs in transition. Eager to level the score, the Lakers worked quickly on offense, finding Trey Jones in the slot off a give-and-go play at the 13:47 mark. Unphased, Farmingdale continued to build off their early success, netting two back-to-back goals at 12:27 and 11:13. Promptly matching the Rams' offensive energy, Oswego lessened their deficit to 3-2 at the 11:04 mark, with a goal scored by Ryan Behringer. As the middle minutes continued to get underway, the Lakers began to tilt the field in their favor, controlling Farmingdale on defense and equalizing the score on attack. Oswego collected a third unanswered goal at 3:35 to gain their first lead of the game, but not easily deterred, a late score by Rams' attackman Joey Forchelli evened the scoreline once again, heading into the second quarter tied 4-4.

Harnessing their final offensive surge, Farmingdale State opened the throttle in the beginning minutes of the 2nd quarter, tallying 4 goals in four minutes. Now trailing 8-4, the Lakers struggled to regain consistent forward momentum, remaining on defense for much of the period. Standing tall in net, Seamus Hand did his best to eliminate any extra scoring chances, but Oswego was unsuccessful in connecting on their zone breakouts. While halftime drew closer, the Rams continued to lay down the hammer, extending their lead to 9-4 with a goal collected by Adam Giovinco with 5:21 to play. Following Giovinco's score, both teams would trade turns on offense, fighting for every possession in the closing minutes. A good take by Garrett Elston would unfortunately just miss the mark, kickstarting Farmingdale's transition. As the clock ticked down, the Rams did not waiver, notching a 10th goal just before the buzzer, entering the intermission with a commanding 10-4 advantage.

Halftime would award the Lakers some respite, which proved much needed, as they returned to play with a second wind on offense. Further helping their case, a slashing penalty charged to Ram Matt Durin, off the starting face off, gave Oswego a prime powerplay opportunity on their first possession. Some quick ball movement would leave senior Hayden Coney wide open on the right side, where he would release a heavy low-to-high rip past netminder Connor Dobson at 14:07. Not letting up, the Lakers returned on offense by which Garrett Elston netted a seventh goal for Oswego. On the next play, the Rams managed to find an eleventh effort, but this would be no match for the torrent of offense the Lakers would capitalize on in the final minutes of the quarter. This flood of goals started with one from Emmett Starowicz at the 5:15 mark and would end with an equalizer notched by Behringer at 2:22, leaving the 11-11 scoreline to be decided in the fourth frame.

Keeping on a roll, the Lakers jumped right back in on attack, earning a 1-goal lead just a 1:39 into the 4th quarter. With both teams hungry for a win, neither spared any effort in ground ball battles or in chasing balls out-of-bounds, but Oswego held steady attaching a 13th goal to the board at 8:37. Not ready to relinquish just yet, Farmingdale kept the game within one just two minutes later at the 6:36 mark, but with the clock quickly disappearing, the Rams continued to scramble for any final chances on offense. Finding a counterweight with under a minute remaining in regulation. With the game tied 13-13, overtime seemed like the inevitable, but no game is over until it's fully over, as the Lakers were quick to pounce on a dropped ball in the midfield. Quickly generating an odd-man rush, Ryan Behringer fed the ball cross-crease to Gavin Angelo who did not hesitate to release a one-timer on Dobson, securing the game-winner and a 14-13 victory over the Farmingdale State Rams.
