Geneseo, NY –The Lakers women's lacrosse team were once again on the road Wednesday afternoon, this time taking on the Geneseo Knights of the Empire 8.
Basics
Oswego: 14 (1-2, 0-0 SUNYAC)
Geneseo: 15 (1-3, 0-0 Empire 8)
Genese, NY I College Stadium
How It Happened
The Lakers established an early presence when
Alexis Hill opened the scoring in the first minute. The Knights battled back after a few Oswego green cards turning a deficit into a 2-1 lead. Oswego's
Aubri Greene answered back immediately to keep the Lakers within striking distance, and after a massive ground ball from
Sadie Zemanick sparked a successful clear, Hill found the equalizer. The opening frame concluded in a 4-4 deadlock.
The second quarter belonged almost entirely to the Lakers' offensive catalysts. Hill continued her scoring tear, taking advantage of a Geneseo green card to put Oswego back on top. While the Knights used draw controls to briefly reclaim a 6-5 lead,
Abigail Dicks and Hill traded goals with the Geneseo attackers in a rapid-fire sequence. Dicks secured her second of the night to push the Lakers ahead, and after the Knights answered yet again, Hill buried her sixth goal of the half on a man-up opportunity. Oswego headed to the locker room with a 9-8 lead over Geneseo.
Geneseo opened the second half by converting a free position shot to tie the game at nine, but the Lakers responded with a determined two-goal run.
Cassidy Croce found the back of the net before Greene added another, giving Oswego an 11-9 cushion. The Knights refused to go away, reeling off two scores of their own to tie it late in the third, but the Lakers once again answered shortly after. Dicks completed her hat trick and
Cecilia Witherel got on the board, allowing Oswego to enter the final regulation period with a 13-11 advantage.
While Greene extended the Laker lead to 14-12, the story of the final frame was Oswego goaltender
Alana Iacovissi, whose string of stellar saves kept the Knights at bay for much of the period. However, Geneseo managed to claw back with two late goals to knot the game at 14-14. In the sudden-death overtime period, the Knights secured the opening draw and scored a heartbreaking goal with 3 minutes remaining.
