HOUGHTON, N.Y. — The Oswego men's tennis team gutted out a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Houghton University on Friday afternoon at the Kerr Pegula Field House, using a strong showing in doubles play and clutch performances in singles to secure the win.
Basics
Oswego: 4 (2-3, 2-1 Empire 8)
Houghton: 3 (4-7, 1-3 Empire 8)
How it Happened
Oswego set the tone early by claiming the doubles point, winning two of three matches. The pairing of Colin Byer and Tyler Yhun delivered a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while Jose Miguel Garcia and Connor Tutor dominated at No. 3 with a convincing 6-1 victory.
In singles, the Lakers needed three wins to clinch the match—and they got them in key spots. Cole Lyons led the charge with a commanding straight-set win at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Tyler Yhun battled through a three-set match at No. 4, bouncing back after dropping the second set to win 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
The decisive point came at No. 5 singles, where Cole Fleming showed resilience in a tightly contested match. After falling in the first set, Fleming responded with a tiebreak win in the second before closing it out 6-3 in the third to secure the team victory.
Houghton pushed Oswego to the brink with wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles, including a three-set comeback at No. 6, but the Lakers' early doubles advantage and composure in pressure moments proved to be the difference.
