Oswego, NY - A back-and-forth battle through three quarters turned into a decisive statement in the fourth, as Oswego surged past New Paltz, 15-10, on Wednesday afternoon.
Basics
Oswego: 10 (9-4, 3-3 SUNYAC)
New Paltz: 20 (3-11, 1-5 SUNYAC)
How it Happened
Clinging to a one-goal lead entering the final frame, the Lakers (10-4, 4-3) erupted for six fourth-quarter goals to break open a tight contest and secure the SUNYAC victory.
The offensive charge was led by a dominant performance from
Garrett Elston, who poured in six goals and added an assist. Elston's finishing touch proved especially critical down the stretch, scoring three times in the final period as Oswego put the game out of reach.
The Lakers came out sharp early, building a 3-1 lead in the first quarter behind two goals from Elston and another from
Gavin Angelo. But New Paltz responded in the second, using a three-goal burst to even the score at 3-3 before the teams traded blows and entered halftime knotted at 5-5.
Momentum continued to swing in the third quarter. Oswego briefly created separation with goals from
Hayden Coney and
Ben Perrotta, but New Paltz answered late, tying the game at 8-8 with just seconds remaining.
Doryn Leclair delivered a crucial response for the Lakers, scoring as time expired in the third to give Oswego a 9-8 edge heading into the fourth.
From there, the Lakers took control.
Leclair and
Emmet Starowicz connected early in the fourth to extend the lead, and after New Paltz briefly pulled within one, Oswego rattled off four unanswered goals in a span of just over a minute.
Ethan McConnell,
Austin Sroda, and Elston fueled the decisive run that turned an 11-10 game into a comfortable 15-10 advantage.
Oswego's dominance extended beyond the scoreboard. The Lakers controlled possession throughout, winning 20 of 28 faceoffs—led by Sroda's 19 victories—and held advantages in shots (52-36) and ground balls (38-25).
In net,
Seamus Hand anchored the defense with 13 saves to earn the win.
McConnell and Leclair each added two goals, while Starowicz contributed a goal and two assists in a well-balanced offensive effort.
