Oswego State student-athletes wrap up long list of fall community service projects
 
OSWEGO, N.Y.  -  Another season of Laker athletics also brought another impressive list of various community service projects and events. Since classes started in September, Oswego State’s men’s and women’s NCAA teams have been busy helping in the community, around campus, and supporting local, national, and international charities.
              
In September, all 24 athletic teams participated in the second annual Laker ‘Lympics, which is a day of friendly competition between the Laker teams. For the second year, team members also brought canned goods and delivered a truck full of food to the Human Concerns Center of Oswego.

Two days later, student-athletes from the men’s basketball, field hockey, and the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams participated in the Teal Walk, held every September on campus to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and raise money for Hope for Heather.
             
Members from the men’s and women’s swimming and diving team participated in the annual Strive to SAVE Lives, while on the same day, the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams ran in the Teal Run in Minoa, NY, again raising money and awareness for Hope for Heather.
               
A week later, the two hockey teams also supported the annual Rover Run, a fundraiser for the Oswego County Humane Society.
            
In October, the men’s soccer team hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Game, while members of the men’s ice hockey, women’s ice hockey, and wrestling teams helped support the Oswego City School District’s Buc Boosters’ 5K.
               
The following weekend, the men’s lacrosse team its annual Green/Gold/Pink Game, raising money for the Wilmot Cancer Institute, while the field hockey team hosted its own Pink Game.
               
Midweek, members of the men’s ice hockey team went down to Fulton’s G. Ray Bodley High School to support the girls’ varsity volleyball team’s annual Teal Night. Two nights later, the men’s and women’s hockey teams hosted their annual Teal Night.
              
Starting in October and continuing throughout the hockey season, the men’s hockey team reinstituted its Hometown Heroes campaign, which recognizes community members who give greatly of themselves. The team also started various fundraisers at home games which supported the Hockey Coaches Care Fund.
             
The following week, the women’s ice hockey team hosted its annual Big Sister/Little Sister party, and then helped prepare, serve, and clean up afterwards at the annual St. Paul’s Harvest Dinner.
             
That weekend, the softball team participated in the first-ever Pink Walk on campus, then combined efforts with the baseball team the next day to help volunteer at the Trunk or Treat Halloween event at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego. Earlier that afternoon, the baseball squad had also teamed up with the women’s basketball team to volunteer at the Special Olympics bowling event at Lakeview Lanes in Fulton.
            
To complete the month’s slate of projects and events, members of the men’s ice hockey team volunteered at the Hotcakes for Hospice fundraiser, and the women’s lacrosse team attended a special party for a local community member fighting cancer.
               
November kicked off with the annual combined efforts of all 24 Laker teams as they raked the yards of more than 50 of Oswego’s senior citizens.
              
The men’s and women’s ice hockey teams hosted a number of games supporting various causes, including an Oswego City Youth Night, Military Appreciation Night, First Responders’ Night, as well as their annual United Way Toy and Food Drive, and the popular Teddy Bear Toss, which raised over $1200 and collected almost 800 stuffed animals for the US Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program.
               
The women’s ice hockey team helped serve and clean up a the United Way’s Stone Soup Luncheon, and when another senior citizen’s yard needed raking, the women’s lacrosse team volunteered to get it done. On Veterans Day, the men’s ice hockey team helped serve and clean up at the Alliance Church dinner. Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s swimming and diving team participated in the annual Ted Mullin Hour of Power workout, supporting sarcoma research.     
              
Members of the field hockey team addressed Holiday Cards for Peaceful Remedies, and before taking a break for Thanksgiving, the softball team drove down to Syracuse to participate in The Climb, a fundraiser for On My Team 16, which supports children with cancer and their families. The men’s and women’s hockey teams laced ‘em up for their annual Holiday Skate, and helped raise nearly $600 for the United Way of Oswego County. Also, in the days before Thanksgiving, the men’s hockey team helped set up a Christmas tree and other decorations at Bishops Commons, a local senior citizen’s facility, and on Thanksgiving Day, they helped serve free dinners to the community at the Alliance Church.
