Magagna hat trick helps Oswego State win

The Oswego State hockey team won its second consecutive SUNYAC game and third straight overall as freshman winger Peter Magagna scored three goals in a 6-2 win over visiting Fredonia on Saturday afternoon at Romney Field House in Oswego.

Fellow freshmen Brendan McLaughlin (goal, two assists) and Rick Varone (three assists) were other big contributors in the Laker victory.

Magagna opened the scoring just 1:38 into the contest as he tapped in a rebound off a shot from Varone. It was the only goal of the opening period.

Magagna also struck quickly in the second period, lighting the lamp just 56 seconds after the period began. It was a power-play goal assisted by Varone and McLaughlin. Ryan Woodward extended Oswego State's lead to 3-0 with a short-handed goal assisted by Jocelyn Dubord.

Kraig Kuzma and Jim Gilbride scored back-to-back power-play goals for the Blue Devils to make the score 3-2, but McLaughlin scored Oswego State's second short-handed goal of the game with just five seconds left in the second period to extend the lead to two goals.

Magagna completed his hat trick in the third period and Jocelyn Dubord added an insurance goal.

Ryan Scott made 27 saves for the Lakers and Rick Cazares made 30 saves for Fredonia.

The Lakers are now 4-2-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in SUNYAC play.  Fredonia fell to 3-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference.
