Plattsburgh's David Friel (Mississauga, ONT) scored 2:56 into overtime to lift the Cardinals to 3-2 win over the Oswego State hockey team on Friday, Feb. 25, at Romney Field House in the opening game of the SUNY Athletic Conference semi-finals.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals (17-11) need either a win or a tie to advance to the conference finals, while the top-seeded Lakers (18-5-3) need a win to force a minigame. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. at Romney Field House.
Plattsburgh forced overtime late in the third period as Dave Young (Mississauga, ONT) deflected a shot from the point by Anthony Leccese (Rochester, NY) with 5:35 showing on the clock. That goal came while the Cardinals were on the power play.
Friel then gave the Cardinals the edge going into Saturday's game by scoring from right side at the lower edge of the circle in the extra session.
After a scoreless first period, Plattsburgh struck first as Young netted his first of two goals at the 1:51 mark.
Oswego State countered later in the period with two goals in just over three minutes.
Paul Perrier (Aurora) knotted the game at scoring on a power play from J-S Richard (Lorraine, QUE) before
C.J. Thompson (Picton, ONT) banged in his own rebound.
Scott Irwin (Mississauga, ONT) earned the lone assist on the play.
In goal for Oswego State,
Ryan Scott (Williamsville) finished with 23 saves.
Craig Neilson (Markham, ONT) earned the win by making 28 saves.
