The SUNY Athletic Conference Championships and the automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament slipped away from the Oswego State women's basketball team as Brockport rallied for a 74-67 overtime victory over the Lakers on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
The Lakers (24-3) will now wait for the NCAA Tournament selection to see if they earn an at-large bid. If selected, it would be the program?s first trip to the tourney. Top-seeded Oswego State appeared to be on its way to the SUNYAC titl,e holding a 56-48 lead with 5:16 remaining in the game. Brockport, the second seed in the tournament, then closed out regulation on a 14-6 run to force the extra session.
In the overtime period, the Lakers scored first, but the Golden Eagles netted the next seven points and never relinquished the lead secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament field.
Oswego's
Sarah Lombard (Saratoga Springs) finished with a double-double, scoring a team-leading 20 points and pulling down 12 boards in the losing effort.
Ashley Broadhurst (Sauquoit), the tournament MVP, led the Golden Eagles (18-9) with 25 points and went 11-for-13 at the line. Brockport's Katie Marcella (Schenectady) also contributed, reaching a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Oswego's
Kelly Mraz (Johnstown) and Lombard were both honored with SUNYAC all-tournament selections. Sara Cavanaugh of Cortland, Kim Schlegel of Brockport and Marcella, completed the team.
