The Oswego State women's lacrosse team upset undefeated Geneseo 9-8 as junior goalie Ashley Perkins (Oneida) made 14 saves to spark the Lakers to the win on Tuesday, April 19, at the South Athletic Complex.
Perkins, making her first start of the season, made her most important save of the game with 50 seconds remaining as Geneseo's Amy Glover (Chittenango) got off a good shot from just inside the eight-yard mark that would have tied the game. Perkins not only made the save, but controlled the rebound allowing the Lakers to carry the ball down the field and kill the clock.
Oswego State is now 3-1 in the SUNY Athletic Conference and 7-3 overall, while the Blue Knights slipped to 2-1 in the conference and 7-1 overall.
The Lakers got off to a good start scoring the game's first four goals by controlling possession of the ball. Laura Dorsey (Auburn) netted the first two with Tricia McNeilly (Lindenhurst) making it 3-0 with 19:07 left in the opening half. Brooke Eldridge (Carthage) made it 4-0 before the Blue Knights finally got on the board when Melody Kuzniar (Rome) scored just past the midway mark of the period.
Geneseo closed out the first half scoring the final three goals closing the gap to 5-4.
In the second half, the Blue Knights got goals from Lauren Chatterton (Syracuse) and Glover in the opening minutes to take their first lead of the game, but the Lakers answered when Kathryn Carbonaro (Auburn) knotted the game at six.
The teams were also tied at seven and eight apiece before Carbonaro scored what turned out to be the winning goal with 7:22 remaining on a free position shot.
In goal for Geneseo, Jess Pausewang (Patchogue) finished with 10 saves.
The Lakers will play their final home game of the season this weekend hosting SUNYAC opponent Oneonta at noon on Saturday, April 23.
