The Oswego State women's lacrosse team scored eight of the game's first nine goals as the Lakers remained in the hunt for first place in the SUNY Athletic Conference by defeating visiting Oneonta 12-7 on Saturday, April 23rd at the South Athletic Complex.
The keeps Oswego State in a tie for the conference lead with a 4-1 record, while moving to 8-3 overall. The loss knocked the Red Dragons to 2-3 in the conference and 2-8 overall.
Brooke Eldridge (Carthage) got the hosts going scoring 1:13 into the game on an assist from Ashley-Anne Maltagliati (East Islip). The Lakers would lead 3-0 before the Red Dragons finally got on the board. After the Oneonta goal, Oswego State netted the next five to grab a commanding lead.
The Red Dragons did make late push in the opening half closing the gap to 9-4 at the intermission.
Oneonta's Kim Powell (Seaford) closed the deficit to 9-5 just over a minute into the second half, but senior Kathryn Carbonaro (Auburn) netted consecutive goals putting the hosts back in control.
Carbonaro, the lone senior on the team, finished her final home game with three goals and Eldridge also finished with three goals.
Goalie Ashley Perkins (Oneida) won her second straight start, making 11 saves.
For Oneonta, Powell finished with a pair of goals and one assist, while Michelle Arket (Scotia) also netted a pair of goals. Jocelyn Grafstein (Smithtown) made 10 saves for the Red Dragons.
The Lakers close out the regular season with three straight road games beginning Friday at Fredonia.
