The Oswego State baseball team handed 19th-ranked Oneonta its first loss in SUNY Athletic Conference play as the Lakers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth and pulled out a 5-4 win over the Red Dragons in the opening game of a doubleheader. Oneonta countered with a rally of its own in the second game scoring three runs in the final two innings for a 3-1 win earning a split on Sunday, April 24, at the South Athletic Complex.
Oswego State is now 12-11 on the season and 4-7 in the SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons are 26-6 and 11-1 in the SUNYAC.
The Lakers won the opener with the big sixth inning as Rob Burke (Rochester) hit a three-run double and Dave Johnson (North Chili) drove in the winning run with a ground out.
Adam Harendza (Johnson City) picked up the win in relief as the sophomore allowed just two hits and no runs in three and third innings.
Burke finished with a pair of hits for the Lakers as did Matt Kimpland (Fulton).
Brandon Galutz (Cortland) was 2-for-3 for the Red Dragons.
In the second game, the Lakers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Kimpland was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first and then came around to score on a single by Tom Farrell (Oswego).
The difference stayed at one run until the top of the eighth when the Red Dragons plated a pair of runs to go on top 2-1. Both runs scored on a single by Brent Tortarella (Staatsburg).
Oneonta added an insurance run in the top of the ninth Thomas Colt (Ithaca) singled in a run.
The Lakers had one final chance in the latter half of the inning putting runners on second and third, but reliever Greg Funck (Roxbury) retired the only batter he faced to pick up the save.
Erik Weber (Bainbridge) got the win for Oneonta, while Harendza suffered the loss for Oswego.
Farrell collected two hits for Oswego State in the second game.
The Lakers will close out conference play on Monday, April 25, hosting New Paltz for a doubleheader at noon.
