The Cortland men's hockey team scored four straight goals to erase a 3-1 deficit and held on for a 5-4 win versus nationally fourth-ranked Oswego Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The victory by the Red Dragons was their first over the Lakers since they closed the 1996-97 season with a 6-3 home triumph.
Cortland (3-12-2 overall, 1-6-1 SUNYAC) opened the scoring seven minutes, 53 seconds into the game when sophomore Justin Bodine (North Massapequa/New England College) one-timed a pass from junior Buddy Anderson (Washington Township, NJ/Bridgewater
Bandits) past Oswego sophomore goalie Ryan Scott (Williamsville/Abitibi Eskimos) on a two- on-one break.
Three minutes later, the Lakers erupted for three goals in 50 seconds to grab a 3-1 lead at the end of one period. Freshman Brendan McLaughlin (Brampton, ON/Brampton Capitals) deflected freshman Kyle McCutcheon's (Caledon East, ON/Brockville Braces) shot over
Cortland senior goalie Matt Meacham's (Massena/Skidmore College) shoulder on the power play to start the spree. Thirty-five seconds later, junior Ryan Woodward (Picton, ON/Wellington Dukes) netted his team-high 20th goal of the season right in
front, and senior Jocelyn Dubord (LaChenaie, QC/St. Jerome Panthers) found the back of the net just 15 seconds after Woodward's score.
The Red Dragons scored the only goal of the second period to draw to within 3-2. Mike Caruso (Downers Grove, IL/New England College) scored from the point of the power play at 12:47, assisted by senior Matt Schillace (Auburn/Niagara University) and Anderson.
In the third period, Cortland struck early to tie the game. Moments after getting out of the penalty box, senior Ryan LaShomb (Rochester/ Aquinas Institute) controlled the puck in
Oswego's zone and fed Anderson for his second goal of the season at 1:39. Cortland then
took advantage of a five-minute power play with two goals. Sophomore Barry McLaughlin (Bellport/Bay State Breakers) put a shot off Scott's shoulder and into the goal from the right circle at 14:11 for a 4-3 lead, and junior Jon Sandos (Oceanside/New York Apple Core) netted the game-winner with a wrist shot from the left point through a screen at 16:25.
The Lakers pulled Scott for an extra skater with nearly three minutes remaining and eventually made it a 5-4 game on McLaughlin's power- play goal at 19:02. Oswego (14-4-1, 6-2) pressured the Red Dragons in the final minute, but Meacham was able to hold off the Lakers and seal the win.
