Lakers win season-opener

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team got three goals from sophomore forward Garren Reisweber, two of which were short-handed goals, in a 9-1 win over Morrisville on Sunday.

The Lakers opened the scoring 3:43 into the first period when freshman Brad Dormeidy took a pass from behind the net and slid a low shot through traffic. Reisweber scored his first goal of the game late in the first period on a deflection to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

Reisweber completed his hat trick with a pair of short-handed goals. One of them put Oswego State ahead 3-0 early in the second period and the other came with 7:02 left in the third period. Both were assisted by Mark Lozzi, who finished the day with a goal and three assists for a team-leading four points.

After Morrisville's Stefan Carnegie scored a power-play goal to reduce the Oswego State lead to 3-1, Derrell Levy and Ryan Woodward scored for Oswego State. Both of those goals came on sharp centering passes from behind the net.

Lozzi, Tony DiNunzio, Reisweber, and Dormeidy scored in the third period.

Reisweber's three goals were the first tallies of his career, as he had no goals and five assists in 12 games as a freshman last year.

Laker goalie Ryan Scott made 10 saves on 11 shots, and Morrisville goalie Cody Williams had 44 saves, as the Lakers held a 53-11 shot advantage. Oswego State did not score a power-play goal in eight opportunities.

Oswego State will host Utica on Friday night at 7 p.m. It is the first game at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego and will include pre-game ceremonies and special activities throughout the night. The game is sold out, but can be seen on Time Warner Sports Channel 26 in central New York and on WTOP on campus and in the Oswego community.
