Lakers close season with exciting win

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team defeated St. John Fisher 9-8 on Wednesday at Laker Field. Seven different players scored for the Lakers and senior goalie Ashley Perkins made 10 saves.

Oswego State scored the first two goals of the game but St. John Fisher regrouped after a timeout and scored four straight, including three goals in a span of 58 seconds. Goals by Michelle Mendell and Meredith Lerch late in the first half evened the score.

Alisha Sarubbi tallied 23 seconds into the second half to put Oswego State in front and they led the rest of the way. Mendell and Tricia McNeilly had two goals each for Oswego State. Lerch, Sarubbi, Colleen Ventura, Jessica Maltese, and Laura Dorsey also scored.

Mendell's goal with 7:24 remaining gave Oswego State a 9-6 lead. The Cardinals scored twice to reduce the Laker lead to one, as Theresa Nobilski's tally came with 40 seconds left to play. Oswego State controlled the draw and held on for the victory.

Carla Jemison, Theresa Nobilski, and Laurie Quackenbush scored twice each for the Cardinals. Danielle Murphy made five saves.

Oswego State finished its season with a 4-10 record. St. John Fisher is 7-8 overall and will play in the semifinals of the Empire 8 tournament on Saturday against Elmira.

Tuesday afternoon's contest was the last game for four Laker seniors - goaltender Ashley Perkins, defenders Brooke Eldridge and Mary DeFelice, and midfielder Laura Dorsey.
