Elmira defeats Oswego State 2-1 in season opener

The Elmira Soaring Eagles defeated Oswego State 2-1 on Friday in a men's ice hockey game at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego. It was the first game of the season for both teams and they will meet again on Saturday night at Elmira's Murray Athletic Center at 7 p.m.

Elmira sophomore forward Rusty Masters scored the game-winning goal with 13:04 remaining in the third period. Masters scored on a rebound after the Soaring Eagles won a face off in the Oswego State zone.

Both teams scored in the first period. Elmira took the lead on a goal by Derrick Ryan, assisted by Albert Mitchell 4:53 into the opening period. The Lakers tied it on a power-play goal by Ryan Ellis with 10:49 left in the period. Tony DiNunzio and C.J. Thompson assisted on the marker.

The Lakers finished 1-for-5 on the power play and held Elmira off the scoreboard in five opportunities for the Eagles, including two stretches of 5-on-3 advantage.

Laker senior goalie Ryan Scott made 21 saves and Elmira's Casey Tuttle had 25 saves in earning the victory.
